Gas Prices in the Midwest Skyrocket

Just a few days ago prices were great and hoverering below $3 a gallon, and apparently there's a problem at a big refinery in NW Indiana. I've seen it go up .75 since Monday and they say it will go up even more. It seems convenient just when oil prices are so low to have such an event.
I remember hearing talk about raising a gas tax when oil dropped this low before, and I'm calling BS on this refinery problem. I know they have shut down refineries in the past in California that had no problems at all and were profitable as hell. That's some shady manipulation of supply to raise prices.
I needed to vent this off...

Price of gas in colorado was under $2.20 a gallon from like april to early july. It then raised basically overnight (at least where I am) to ~$2.70 and has stayed there ever since

2.30 here was recently up to 2.60ish but went back down. I saw it for 1.99 a few times at the beginning of the year.

Oh yeah, I saw it at $1.80 or $1.90 once or twice earlier in the spring over here

It really wasn't that long ago when it was under a buck a gallon. (If you consider late 90's as not long) This increase just really pissed me off because I had almost a grand worth of work done on my car recently and every penny counts. It was just one recent positive that got wiped out in an instant. Probably doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's more places you can go to get away without sweating about the gas you're using.

Yeah I hear ya on how insane the prices have been the past 12 years or so. I will never forget when the recession hit. I owned a huge diesel dodge truck and it was also my only commuter. I didn't have a good job back then and diesel was like 6-7$ a gallon, fucking nuts.

More groceries i buy the cheaper my gas gets since I get a discount @ pricechopper
Fill up once a month for around 10 bucks when it normally costs me about 39 for a full tank of premium
Gas isn't too bad in the mid 2 dollar range

It's around $3 in my area but I thought prices were supposed to drop by a dollar in the not so near future.

Everything is taken into consideration. I only eat what I make at home, and the trips I make to buy food is calculated out to get the most out of one trip. I would never drive out to get just one thing.

Stan Meyer invented an engine that ran off water in the 80's. The Pentagon was REALLY interested and an oil company allegedly offered him a billion dollars.
He ended up dead from food poisoning in 1998.

So you believe this stuff? Problem is it takes the same amount of energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen as you get back when you burn the hydrogen.

I filled up at $2.15 today.
Diesel used to be a lot more than gas, actually if you go back a few decades it was cheaper than regular but then they jacked it up. Now its come down, I actually saw a couple stations recently with diesel at the same price as reg. Its all a racket.

Here's Canada's logic on gas prices.
1.20$ per liter on average. 4 liters is roughly a gallon. So 4.80$ per gallon... Although as of like 3 days ago, it suddenly went down to 4.20$ per gallon.
So as a global oil producer we decided to sell everything at a profit to every other country.
We should keep enough for ourselves at cost for our own national consumption. That would reduce the cost of life by a lot and help the poor. Cars are a necessary liability that cost a lot of money to maintain. So that would mobilize people a lot more easily. Its a big ass country to drive across. Its not as if we are that big of a market anyway. The corporation would easily survive.

I did some math and we're paying 3.60-3.70 USD/gallon around here.
Some of you really don't have it that bad.. and the guy that said $2/gallon..fuck you. That's .65 a liter around here. No one's seen prices like that in Ontario for probably 30 years or more.

IDK, I really got into it years back for like a week, and they even have the various schematics involving it. I've heard both sides of the argument but I have no strong opinion either way. I can say that if it was at all possible it would be the last thing oil companies would want coming out.

Fair enough. Not saying it's impossible to use water as an energy source (e.g. by nuclear reactions), but there is no way to come out ahead by the process described. The fishy sounding death does make for a good story though.

I think a lot of the price difference is taxes. I have a hard time imagining paying way less than I do now and thinking it was expensive, but I guess it's all relative.
