We aren't handing out mortgages to anyone who will fog a mirror, but I guess we could do that again so the right wing can blame poor people for ruining everything, and scoffing at the notion of predatory lending.
^^^ retarded post of the day!
So giving loans to people who can't afford it is a good thing to you??!
And we wonder why America is going to shit....
If I lend $1,000 to a homeless man and he doesn't pay me back... who are you going to blame? Me? Or the homeless man who shouldn't have borrowed the money?
Giving loans to people who can't afford them is bad, but those people are not the sole party responsible. Sure, the homeless man shouldn't borrow $1,000 he can't pay back, but in this scenario, I would be much more to blame.
Edit: I just noticed you called Ecstatic retarded... while entirely misinterpreting his post...
I hope you realize that this is the sort of thing that makes nobody take you seriously as anything more than a right wing caricature.
If the govt forces you to loan the homeless man money, then are you still to blame?
We already know the banks were betting against investments they were selling to their customers. We know every single major bank has had to settle lawsuits for insider trading and screwing over customers.
Lets not pretend they A) give a shit about the law, or B) were forced at gunpoint to make record profits off the populace and then get bailed out (when their house of cards finally fell) by that same populace.

you are dead right on this It was actually democrats who insisted that fannie and freddie where A OK and didn't need regulation and oversight.
Ironic--Republians finally act responsibly, democrats ignore them, then Republicans get blamed for the mess this is classic.

Who is blaming Republicans for the mess on this forum?
Don't conflate the liberals on here with your stereotypical view of one, unless you want us labelling you.

Oh for fucks sake, 50 years ago a bank wouldn't even consider giving you a home loan unless you had 20% down, but libs cried that that was unfair to the "poor" so what did daddy govt do? They backed these loans, guaranteed them, gave the banks the criteria to go by, said if they have this that and the other, they qualify
So of course the banks sold off these shitty loans, shorted them, why not when default was all but guaranteed...
Real estate used be an almost guaranteed investment, until govt got involved in securing home loans for people that had NO business owning one...

Agreed. I don't like government backed student loans either. I think government should either create tuition free colleges, or get out of the college business altogether. Government backed loans give banks the freedom to act with impunity, and when every asshole has access to loans, prices inflate and create bubbles.
This issue is a bit deeper though. The banks were packaging bad loans and trading them as if they were good loans. I am not fully aware of all of the intricacies of this business, but it goes beyond the government. The banks should have been broken up, after we bailed them out.

What the banks were actually doing is like playing hot potato, they all knew the music would stop, they were just trying to offload them before it did. If the govt wasn't forcing them to make bad loans, they would still be doing it. They wouldn't have been "toxic", nowadays one bank doesn't own the loan for it entirety, it's not uncommon for a home loan to change hands dozens of times, it really doesn't have anything to do with the sizes of the banks, it has to do with the value of the loan.

An opinion piece I came across this morning talking about how Bernie may do in the debates. Also outlines some of Hillary's positions, how they've changed over the years along with public opinion, etc.

I haven't been following the Biden situation much. I'd be somewhat surprised if he entered but I think he'd have a better shot as the establishment candidate than Hillary at this point.

I think hes waited too long, Hillary would have to drop out for Joe to have a chance.
Also, for those of you as cable-less as myself, CNN will be streaming the debate for free online.

Yes, I was just on their website. For some reason I thought the debate was at 11:00AM... This debate should be interesting. Hillary isn't a polished debater by any stretch, but I'm not so sure Bernie is either. Bernie doesn't know when to sensor himself in the name of PR sometimes lol! It's something I love about him, but it does hurt him.

Really? I always thought she was a very good public speaker, not as good as Obama and certainly not as good as the all-time best- Bill.

I think she is terrible, but that may just be me. She doesn't come off intelligent to me, and she looks very unnatural. She doesn't hold any real positions, because her positions change with the polls, so it's hard for her to make good arguments.

This is exactly what I want! All the guys trailing behind can attack Hillary all day, while Bernie just speaks his mind

Exactly
As flawed as it is, the general view of a Bernie detractors is some foaming at the mouth Lenin. Let him calmly convey his message and explain why it'll work better than what we have or what the other candidates are advocating.
