A friend picked these mushrooms. They were found on a stump in eastern Pennsylvania. They smell slightly sweet and mushroomy. I don't know if there are any poisonous look a likes. A confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to say yes, although I'm also thinking maybe Meripilus giganteus. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

I think that Meripilus giganteus is only a European species, if you're in the US I would guess Meripilus sumstinei

yes to M. sumstinei, a "rooster of the woods" they taste really good, but are tough. Run them through your food processor and add some breadcrumbs an egg and some spices and make a mushroom loaf out of them

That is a great idea!...I sauteed some young ones in butter....and the taste was amazing...they are packed with flavor...but, like you said, they are a bit tough...I will certainly try this. Thanks!

I've got a big container of these marinating right now. Going to try making mushroom jerky!

I tried cooking these in butter with garlic and processing for mushroom loaf, but the texture is like eating a piece of fabric still. The flavor is great but like i said, texture is similar to really fibrous ginger.
Any suggestions for cooking? Do I need to cook them longer or is this just how they are when mature?
I might try making a stock for mushroom soup if all else fails.

I made the jerky today. It came out pretty good. Started with a very young, fresh M. sumstinei. Tore it into small strips. Mixed together tamari soy sauce, molasses, sugar, a few drops of sriracha, and a few drops of liquid smoke. (should have added a little vinegar too). and let it marinate overnight. Then dried 'em on a sheet of foil in the oven on the lowest setting (170f) with the door propped open with a wooden spoon. (a dehydrator would probably work even better) Checking on it, and mixing them around every 45 min.
