Knowing and Memory
    #2208028 - 12/29/03 05:17 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was thinking today that somehow, when we try to recall something
we know whether we've recalled the right thing (i.e. the thing
we were searching for) and whether what we've recalled is made
up by our imagination or "true". e.g. I was trying to remember a
particular smell in a bakery, it was quite distinct. Try as I
might I couldn't recall the smell. I tried to imagine something
up but somehow knew that it wasn't the right smell. I just thought
it was interesing how we forget things, label them X, but somehow
remember that A, B and C are not X. Interesting. I guess in my
isolated example, if I did correctly remember the smell I would know
it because it would trigger off other sensations in the body
associated with that smell. But even if I try to remember those
associations I doubt I would remember the smell...
recall is an interesting phenomenon...
because it would trigger of a host

Smell is something I can't imagine at all right now. I just tried cinnamon, bread and cucumbers. When i do recall a smell it is true. Other stuff I recall I'm more likely to question.

Okay, I have to give my 2 cents. Smell is a very important sense. We associate memories with it.

I remember once walking through a mall, when I was in my late 20's, and I smelled a gorgeous white flower smell. What's that while flower that smells so nice? My favorite scent.

Anyways, it was a scent similart to that, and it evoked some really strong feelings in me, and I didn't know why.

I was telling my mom about it, and she got curious, so she went to the mall with me. We somehow found it again, because I didn't get the name of the scent the first time around, and it turns out it was the perfume she used to wear 20 years or more earlier, when I was little, under 10 years old.

Your brain actually never forgets a smell once it has smelled it once.

There's a big difference between memory itself and memory recall

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

I have these strange memory anomalies...I like to call them "flip-switches". They are memories of thoughts that I had when I got really stoned as a child (14 years old). When I remember them, it feels like a strange lyrical dejavu, because they arent so much a memory, but a memory of a strange lyrical thought I cant really put my finger on.

that's exactly what I was trying to touch on
The interesting this is that when we do memory recall we
somehow know when u've hit at the right memory we're trying
to recall...everything "fits". It's like putting in the
missing link in a circuit and everything lights up.
My take on this is that it's because of associations.
e.g. if we're trying to remember the name of an actor
we can't just fool ourselves by picking any actors name
cause we know, by association, what other movies that
actor was in and all the associative memory that goes
along with the name, i.e. images, sounds, where we saw
the movie, who we were with when we saw the movie etc.
Only the right name will fully elicit the complete
response. Again, it's interesting that we know what
the "feeling" of what a correct response is. Smells
are harder to remember so that's why I picked that example.

Shit, I seriously was thinking of this post sometime, maybe last night in bed, because it really interests me and I really want to contribute, and I remember thinking about it and finding something I wanted to add, and I seriously don't remember what it was... I'm dead serious.

But you are right about the associations thing. I follow connections consciously when I try to recall something, constantly trying to take different approaches and pathways to reach this key, this one little word that will bring back everything, just like you mention....

Maybe you know what you need to at that time? Perhaps I thought of something to add and then forgot about it so that I would have freshly experienced this in order to be able to come up with some good thoughts.

At any rate, time to go re-read everything and follow the intersecting railroads of thought....

This is all so intriguing, though. hehe
Peace.

Ahh, those vestiges were just an illusion anyways... :smirk:

Still haven't remembered what it was, but I really haven't gotten a chance to think about it as I have had all sorts of things demanding my attention... damn these inputs.
Peace.

interesting i think smell is by far the most potent sense when it comes to triggering memories, like a whiff of eggnog or something can bring back all the feeling you ever associated with chirstmas. Also interesting how hard it is to 'imagine' a smell as opposed to 'imagining' a cite. i can clearly picture a loaf of bread in my head but imagining the smell is much less clear.

another wierd thing i swear i went many years of my life believing i had gone to the grandcanyon, even told people all about my trip there, and then one day i learned it was all a dream and that id never been there before. THe same thing has happend with many of my dreams like normalish things that i just file away as memory until its later disproved. more than once ive waken up from sleep, reached for a gram of weeed in my pocket and then realised that said gram was dreamed up.
