Anyone else dunk like this?

I took these pics a while ago, wondering if anyone else does this. A lot of the times with cakes flushes come in at different times, so I am re dunking them at different times. If I put just one or two cakes in a pot with a plate on it, the plate may end up shifting and the cakes floating up.
I got the idea of taking a Rubbermaid container, putting the cake(s) in, filling it up overflowing in the sink and putting the lid on.
When pushed down by the lid, the cake displaces more water pushing all of the air out of the container. They may not get as hydrated as being at the bottom of a deep pot because of the pressure, I'm not sure but for me it works and is more convenient. Anyone else do this? Criticism?

No criticism. I used a similar method of rehydration when I was doing the BRF thing. I put my cakes in a large pot full of water and submerged them using a plate with a slightly smaller diameter than the opening of the pot. Once the plate was pushed down far enough, the water filling the top of the plate held it in place and kept the cakes submerged.

I started doing this one day when I was too lazy to get a pot and a plate and that container was sitting in front of me and I was like hmmm...

If it works, it works. I've used the exact same method that you're using. Worked just as good as the pot & plate.

just seems simpler to me and less dishes to wash, hence the laziness

I used to dunk the same way... I used taller cylindrical shaped containers... But basically same thing...my lid screwed on...kept the cake submerged

That's what I used to do back in the day when I first brought dunking cakes to the public. Used to put them in a rubber maid filled with water and put them in the fridge for a few days. I am actually working on something new. Taking a large sponge and burying it the center of a casing. Maybe drilling a few holes down into it after it colonised

i usually just take the top layer of verm off as good as i can and pour distilled water into the jars they colonized in and use soda bottle caps to submerge the cake fully with the lid on. works well for me, less mess, less touching the cakes , less possible self contamination, tho birthing and fruiting isnt a sterile process anymore. i figure less is better when it comes to open invitations to possible contams.

Oh that's a great idea man. I'm totally ripping that off lol. I read tap water is fine to use for dunking does it have to be distilled water?

i wouldnt use tap water, the city may clean their water but pipes from houses, ect can host nasty bacteria, distilled water is your best bet. make sure it sayes distilled water tho, bottled water that dont say it hasnt been distilled hence can possibly host bacteria or contams.

tap is usually a better choice than distilled. tap water has ions and thus doesn't "steal" them from the cakes. if you drink distilled water you can kill yourself by diluting the ion balance, electrolyte(stuff plants want). tap water is good for your cakes unless your tap water is from somalia.
LA tap water > distilled water. for the purpose of dunking and spraying cakes

yeah the house im renting is in the oldiest part of our town and the sediments that are in the water is crazy cloudy. not cool even to drink. i would rsther starve it of oins then co tam my project with a crazy bacteria. just my opinion tho. to each of its own, i say do as u see fit n roll wit it.

Yeah this is what was explained to me. I live in the country I'm pretty confident in my well water over distilled

One might think distilled water is best because it's just pure water. Distilled water oz only good for putting in your radiator

yeah i just dont know if i should rely on our drinking water when the ppm are probably way above national standards of 50 ppm, distilled water is about 1 ppm and purified water is not above 10 ppm. my kitchen sink however could be upwards of 200 or more , particals that are seen when pouring a glass of water is gross, take like 45 mins to have a clear glass of water. ill roll with purified as it still contains some oins. ill save the distilled water for syringes and making my pda

Yep, so your water can't be 50ppm its 1,000,000 ppm. It could have 50ppm chlorine or 50ppm sodium or 50ppm carbonate but you can't call your water 50ppm that doesn't make any sense.

yes i understand that its my pipes, and with the condition of the pipes the parts per million of tds ( totally dissolved solids ) would be higher than what is put out by the city. all im tryin to say is city water is fine, my water here because of old original pipes. my girl is gonna take a few samples to work and see what all in our water.

In terms of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), in the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises against consuming water containing more than 500mg/liter, otherwise known as 500 parts per million (ppm) of TDS, although many health specialists believe that ideal drinking water should be under 50 ppm or lower.

If you're talking TDS who cares chances are those things are good for your cakes. Trace minerals like zinc, tap water is the only place your mycelium gets it from. If you have TDS its not going to make your water cloudy anyway the D in TDS means dissolved

yeah i realize that and this is why i only use tap water for pc sterilization. Tap water is treated with a large number of chemicals in order to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. In addition, it may contain other undesirable contaminants like toxic metal salts, hormones and pesticides, or it may become contaminated by chemicals or microbes within pipes (e.g. lead, bacteria, protozoa). So all im saying is if i lived somewhere else with trustable updated piping , i would use tap water for other than sterilization.

You can weigh your cakes to monitor moisture levels. It also can tell you how long you really need to dunk for. I typically write the weight of my empty jars on them, and then the new number when it has substrate in it.
If your jar is 200g and your cake is 100g it would be 300g in total. After 1 flush it might be 270g. If you dunk and it goes back to 300g you have probably dunked too long as it should have lost some substrate weight to the mushrooms in that flush so it should always be decreasing a little.
You can monitor your flush weights and try and determine now much it should need added back. Or you could dunk cakes for different lengths of time, see how much water was absorbed and see which do best in the next flush and use that in future.
I have also wondered about dunking under pressure which I guess would increase the speed it rehydrates, but may have some negative effects.
