I admit I have been lucky so far--but I think my luck is being supported by the nature of the material I am using here for substrate. Grass composted in the manner described in the OP seems to be remarkably resistant to contamination, whether it be sterilized or pasteurized. I actually can't talk about what it does when pasteurized because the two times I have used it, it was sterilized. But I have a feeling that if I just grabbed it right out of the trash bag where I composted it, and then mixed it with spawn, it would still come through like it has done so far here.

Well you should do some controlled experiments. Something working twice does not make it a good idea. Prove why it works. Do a controlled experiment

I agree. I am putting up another mini tub with slight variations in technique.
