The only political system that completely eliminates taxes is anarchy.
Socialism is no different from any other political system in that it entails taxes. What makes socialism distinct tax-wise is the idea that the burden of taxation should be directly proportionate to the wealth of the taxpayer, I. E. The wealthier you are, the more taxes you should pay and the bigger the relative burden should be. This is the only fair way to tax income and the only way to provide for robust public services, on which most of us rely to some extent, that liberate and empower the entire public, not just the wealthy.
The problem in America is that the top bracket of the progressive income tax has been broken down by special interests since the 80's and now places the greatest tax burden on the middle to upper middle class, with the very wealthy paying a smaller percentage of their income. Without this revenue the government doesn't have enough money to fund decent quality public services. Now those same folks who broke the progressive income tax in the first place are buying up our public schools and prisons so they can cut costs even further while escaping public accountability. Those of us who use (or are subjected to, as the case may be) any public service are the ones who find ourselves with lower standards of living and less financial security and mobility than our parents enjoyed. Shitty education and inhumane prisons and inaccessible health care drag the whole country down, producing entire generations of unskilled, dependent miscreants.
Taxation in its current form is essentially a barrier to upward mobility. It shouldn't be like that, it should level the playing field and ensure that people's liberties aren't limited by their social or economic status. Instead, we find ourselves sliding into a modern feudal system with a few elite lords who exercise absolute control over the lives of a much larger peasant class.

Yeah, because socialism isn't about protecting the liberties of everybody regardless to their economic or social status, it's about exercising the most conspicuous charity possible.
