Global Warming / Climate Change
    #22076242 - 08/11/15 12:53 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Still... In 2015, I can't believe this topic is still around...  Give up people, we are going to die.

Nobody is denying climate change is happening, what people are denying that it is totally man driven.  Which even now looks silly..  We are merely buying a few years at the rate we are changing.  This force has been in a process for over 10,000 years and we are just now seeing the tail end of it, face it.. We need to start preparing for climate change rather than trying to fight it.

You can dispel climate with a simple explanation:

Let's say you have a Ice block.  It's ice because it is sitting in an environment that allows it to stay ice.

Now, this ice block is in a small room.  You turn on the heater and crank it up, it does not matter what number, any number that satisfies you that is sufficient enough to melt the ice.

The heating of the room compared to how fast the ice is melting..

The heating happens in what is seemingly instant, while the sculpture takes time.. A time much longer than the heating of the room to melt.

What this story outlines is what we are seeing and facing today.  We can't go back and turn the heater off, we are just now starting to see it's rapid affect on us, it is far too late..  I don't think for a single second that if everybody on the planet switches to electricity that it will make any significant difference in how the earth cycles it's co2.

At one point, all the carbon that in and what things are made of was part of earth.  It's not like we are just "making" c02.. It has always been a part, we just found a way to interrupt the cycle by adding more in at a time.  Nobody is even addressing that it is our meat industry that is another major factor of our pollution, we just have not found a sufficient way to make money off of it yet.

How about some crazy indoor cow operation where it collects the gas to produce it's own electricity?  Just saying.. We have ways to make use of these wasteful operation's, nobody is willing to tackle it though.

I am at a loss of what to decide to do other than move away from coast lines and expect people to lose their shit when it goes down.  It's been in front of us this whole time, it's just now only for money making.  I am also aware that, if we need to evolve as a species, climate change is a good reason and I will only support it for the biproduct that it will be a step in the right direction... Not a step to save our planet, but us.  We  should be raping this planet for everything it has to colonize space and secure our future, not live and try to keep holding onto the past.

we can't live in space, its a waste of resources to try and setup space colonys, all that does is waste what we have.  Shit on earth gets recycled, shit in space is lost forever.  Until we have the technology to actually make it to a planet that can sustain live on its own, there is no point. probes, and astroid mining have actual uses for earth however.

also the amount of heat humans produce is substantial, turning off all the heat, shutting down planes, ect, would radically change earth

The planet has killed 99.99% of the species before we showed up..

It kills endlessly with out mercy, on a mass scale that makes Hitler look like child's play.

Humans are just showing up at the final moment trying to take credit for it.  Everything was destined to die until we came along.. Now it seems that we don't want to face that reality that maybe everything was meant to die for the creation of us..

I'm not going to disagree with your main argument, but the focus of global climate change is the fact that human activities are speeding up the process. This will result in catastrophes that are reoccurring more often and more violently. Never on a human time scale had c02 been this prevalent in our atmosphere and that is why we attribute it to our being here, we are adding on quickly and heavily to the natural order of things. Either way the planet will be here long after we are so don't worry about it, we need to worry about our species if we want to prosper in this universe.

I agree that the main argument is that it is speeding it up.  I just don't see it changing anything 12,000 years into this cycle of warming.  Anything we do now is just a drop in the bucket, 10-100 years added before the first catastrophe.

We might not even make the world "green" by the time the oceans suck up the coast line, we are just moving way too fucking slow.  Our idea's cannot permeate culture fast enough.

Climate change has always been there. There has never been a period of time when climate wasn't changing. When you have a sphere with a sliver of fluid sheathing it, and its spinning and orbiting a heat source, then it will always be dynamic. The climate will never and has never been at a steady state.

And, switching to electricity won't change anything. Most of the electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal and natural gas power plants).

I think if we invest in research on nuclear power, we have a chance to slow down global warming. We would need to really research it though and understand how to contain it.

Climate change though, that's something that has always happened.

Fusion fusion fusion.  If we don't get it we will be in caves again because everything is going to run out and solar and wind have no chance of being more than supplemental

i still don't understand how we still have so many nuclear reactors, we know that its not a question of if, but when, something is going to fuck up, or fuck it up.  All that shit over in japan and somehow everyone pretends everything is under control and it won't happen here?  how many times does it have to happen before we decide oh thats just too many nuclear disasters

dude... the ice caps melted in 2007 just like al gore said, there's no way he
could be wrong since he invented the internet, of course the y2k bu already
killed half the people when it plunged us into total darkness and those that
were not killed off by those events died in 2012

so, you wanna know what to do... nothing because there's no fucking
catastrophic event going to happen, the ice caps havent melted and while they
appear to be getting smaller to the alarmists they actually grew in 2008 and
2009 and all those melting glaciers....

and somehow, global warming is creating more ice

i thought i heard overall total ice was melting tho, like over in that greenland/iceland area shits melting i think, and they were saying a town in alaska was about to melt and people would have to swim to a new ice shelf like seals or something when that happens.

also thought i heard the south pole was melting and thats why russia dropped flags because soon people will be able to farm minerals ect, so yah im pretty certain shit be meltin

We don't need nuclear power, we have so many forms of renewable energy to utilize that we take for granted. Solar, wind, hydro, electric to name a few. We have to necessities for a green renewable planet but like always humans have found a way to fuck everything up. -_-

solar is inefficient and a heavy polluter, hydro destroys millions of acres of
arable land and wildlife habitat in addition to the trees, wind turbines are
efficient but also pollute like solar but directly kill wild life

the closest to green energy there is is nuclear

If you don't trust the data from scientist, there is plenty of evidence that change is happening at an accelerating rate. Glaciers are retreating and vanishing worldwide - features that have existed for millienia are gone in a century or less. The ice caps are are shrinking. The North Pole ice sheet covers less surface area every cycle and Antarctica is even worse as the ice pack depth is practically collapsing. Areas that used the be tens of meters thick are now a few.

There is currently a serious study that is considered to reduce global warming should it become a real threat.

If you take sulfur dioxide and inject it in the stratosphere, it will bond with water molecules and create a sunscreen that would reduce sunlight by 1% (given the right dose).

So, I'll answer all the questions before they are asked.

Q. Where do you find enough sulfur to fill the entire atmosphere?

- A. Right now, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, there are mountain weighing in at 30 million tons sitting in the doing nothing at all. It is a by product of of the oil sands.

Look for yourself:

Q. Ok, so how much do you need?

- A. Well, you only need a small amount. The way the sulfur dioxide works is wonderful. A few grams of it practically eliminates the effect of one ton of CO2. So all we need is roughly 25000 tons per year.

Q. How do you bring 25000 tons in the stratosphere?

- A. You take 100 F-16 loaded with as much it can carry (let's say a ton for example), therefore they would need to do 250 exits each per year. Easily achievable. There are 1.1 million commercial flights per year just to give you a reference.

Q. If you unload over the US, how does it spread all over the planet?

- A. The winds in the stratosphere would equally distribute the sulfur dioxide all across the planet including the polls in less than 2 weeks.

Q. How much does it cost?

- A. An estimates 700 million dollars. Essentially, the jet fuel and the pilots. The sulfur itself is super cheap

Q. What's the catch?

- A. You can't unring that bell.

Japan was fucking stupid to put a nuclear power plant on the beach. I mean, come on, Tsunami is a Japanese word FFS. You need lots of water for cooling purposes, but a reservoir is relatively easy to build.

So, it's about location. Put the plant somewhere that won't cause a global catastrophe if there is a melt down. But, more important, research how to minimize the potential for a meltdown. Nuclear actually is pretty green when done right.

Solar, Wind, Hydro, etc. doesn't produce enough power to sustain our need for it.

There have been more oil spills than nuclear disasters. And, oil spills are devastating to the environment. I'm telling ya, We are addicted to oil and energy, the only thing that we can replace oil with is nuclear power. Sure, nothing is fool proof. But, if we don't switch over soon, we are in for a rude awakening.

Everything runs on oil. Once oil is too expensive to use, everything will shut down. It will be utter chaos. Nuclear power could help us avoid that.

You guys bashing our renewable energies, some is better than the none we are using to help ween us off our oil addiction. I'm not saying nuclear won't work but we definelty need to increase our risk assessment as a species before we dabble into things that could destroy us..

This is definitely the potential savior, and one tough nut to crack (fusion). For a very long time some have said it was :20 years away: from coming to fruition. Problem being, it continues to be 20 years away.

Sometimes I wonder if a global-scale Manhattan Project type of endeavor could yield faster gains in this area. Luckily though, we have finally seen enough research progress recently to suggest a 20-30 year timeline might finally be accurate.

To the poster who said "no one is denying it" though, I have to disagree. All over the place you see entities trying to codify denial into law. For example in NC, a state with a lot of low-lying coastal lands, state government has essentially made it illegal for state and local planning agencies to account for the probable consequences; apparently burying one's head in the sand is their preferred approach.

There is little doubt that the issue is used as a political football by some, but IMO anyone who denies man's considerable contribution to accelerated change is simply not scientifically literate enough to make such a determination in the first place.

You guys bashing our renewable energies, some is better than the none we are using to help ween us off our oil addiction. I'm not saying nuclear won't work but we definelty need to increase our risk assessment as a species before we dabble into things that could destroy us..

thats just it we really don't even need energy, we managed to live just fine for thousands of years mostly without it, and now with our more advanced technologys the way they lived in the past could be greatly improved by using just a tiny bit of energy that could be produced at home.

then have just the major citys/capitals or something use real power committed to researching technologys, space travel, ect.

bottom line is the risk vs reward just isn't worth having hundreds of nuclear reactors littered around everywhere, its stupid plain and simple.

energy makes life easier, thats it, and in return we get pollution, dead animals, mutated genes and eventually completely wiped off earth, totally worth

We're addicted to oil and coal. Coal is where we get most of our electricity from.  Even if we got fusion to work we still use oil for almost everything from plastic to countless chemicals. There are 7 gallons of oil in every tire. So it's not just a discussion about energy.

The good news is there is no imminent death coming from climate change any time soon. As fast as technology is changing the world I don't think it will be long until we find a much better energy source.

We understand all of the ways we are changing the atmosphere and the environment. Within the last couple decades the attitude towards global warming has shifted from skeptical to an almost panicked state. Couple that with the fact that we also understand how fusion and fission work tells me that we will find a way.

what i don't understand is how the universe manages to not only create it, but created billions of stars.  not only did it manage to create it, but it managed to do it at freezeinggggggggggggggggggg temps and then manages to keep them running for billionssssssss of years.

meanwhile every form of energy we have is flawed in some way

almost makes you wonder if the key to doing it, is doing it in space.  and if our dumbasses manage to do it, we will prob turn earth into a giant fucking fireball because we are retarded like that and do shit before we understand it cuss of $$$$$$

wasn't their theorys that the hydrogen collider thingy would create a tiny blackhole and suck earth or something into it, like they were saying a 1% chance that could happen and that they weren't really sure what was going to happen, then they turned it on anyway

The terrifying thing is if the climate warms enough to melt the ice holding the methane in the ocean bed, venting it all at once and heating the atmosphere so much that basically the whole planet explodes in an inferno.
