Let's talk ciders! 1

I love me some craft beer, and I love my mead and wine but cider will always take the cake for me.
What is everyone's favorite ciders or cider brands? Here is what I think of some ciders I've had.
Angry Orchard: These were my first ciders so they will always have a special place in my heart. Their classic crisp apple is a very good go-to cider but their Cinnful apple is probably my favorite of theirs. One thing I really like about Angry Orchard is their cellar series, which is more or less cider in bombers. Iceman is amazing and might be my favorite cider and muse is a fun alternative to champagne.
Wood Chuck: Wood Chuck is probably my favorite cider maker. Their normal amber is only alright but their gumption is unarguably my go-to cider, t he granny apple is also just alright bu the summer seasonal is fantastic and tastes like candy. I'm drinking their barrel reserved right now and I usually dislike bourbon aged cider but this one is really tart and super tasty.
Smith and Forge is another worthy mention, it tastes very fresh and clean to me and it's not a bad 6%.
Another worthy mention is Redds wicked apple, I usually dislike Redds but I got these for for Forest and the 8.5% did not disapoint.
But my all time favorite cider has got to be Apple Strussle by Scrumpys cidery. They are a small local cidery in my town but I swear this cider tastes like Strussle. It's absolutly a desert cider and I'd never call it a go-to but it's fucking fantastic.
I'm not a big fan of Crispen or Longbow but someone should convince me otherwise.

I have enjoyed Samuel Smiths organic cider, Strongbow, Woodchuck, and Angry Orchard ciders.
I have not had many, had a few flavored ciders which were decent, a pear one that was very refreshing.

Redds is delicious, I almost have enough bottles to build another beer bottle garden bed, I litterally have hundreds of their bottles, I can't get enough.
Hard Cider is my preferred type of brewed beverage to enjoy.

Growers is the best one I've had that I can get around here. I don't like the flavoured ones.. Cider is supposed to taste like cider. Bought a blackberry one once, way too sweet and too much blackberry. I actually poured it down the drain.

I love ciders too!
My favorites are Hornbsy, Smith and Forge, and Strongbow.
Also, theres a local ciderery that makes this ginger cider. Holy crap, super good.
It called Ginger Ninja, best combo ever.

Never had Julian's, Growers, Samuel Smiths or Hornbsy where are they out of?
And if you like Redds that much TheNatureKid I might have to give them a second chance, I just had this strawberry one once that really turned me off from them.

I make cider for a living. My favorite cider company is Tieton, everything they do is gold. Other favorites are Finnriver, Atlas, Devoto, Reverend Nat's, Jk's - these are all great.
I cannot stand woodchuck or angry orchard, and esp redds apple. they are the coors and pabst of the cider world. I am a cider snob however. this is only my opinion

This is the best cider its brewed in my town in the fall and the apples are grown up on on blue hill and brewed like 1000ft away so its super fresh stuff and its actually redic cider like idk what the apple blend is or stuff but its really good but only so much of it is made for only a few months but its really good to bring to halloween or thanksgiving or falltime parties and activities! I like the dry and spiced best but they have a few.

Redds apple is not a cider. Hence why it's called Redds apple ALE

I get Growers sometimes too (think it's from BC Sara?) First drink I ever really got hammered on in high school. Strongbow I'm not a fan of. I'd be interested to find an alcoholic cider that tastes like the dark-colored non-alcoholic cider they sell at the grocery store though, never had an alcoholic cider with the same kind of biting aftertaste.

Strongbow is a little different in the US than it is in Europe. The commercial market in the states caters to those who like a sweet fruity drink. Cider is supposed to be around 7% and much drier. Here, companies will ferment their juice all the way out to dryness (no more sugars left) and then will dilute it by pouring back in a lot of apple juice. which is why all the cider youre likely to see in stores tastes like carbonated juice

honestly the best thing is to find an apple tree and wait till fall, once the apples have fermented on the ground just pick them up and start eating. Im not sure if its all the fresh air, or the holes from the worms, but something really brings out the cider flavor

I don't drink much but I love one of these every once in awhile, they are local too which is a bonus.
My favorite that I have tried is definitely that. Such a rich flavor, I have had some that taste almost like juice and some that are stronger and more bitter.
They almost always hit the spot though
Lambic is amazing too, also a super rich flavor and is even sweeter. Sometimes they are too sweet for me but they can mix well with other things due to that.

Aspalls Demi-Sec and Dry. I've only tried those two. Demi-Sec is my favorite, just slightly sweet.
It's high-end English cider, 7 bucks a bottle but well worth it. They suggest serving it cool, but I like it ice cold.

All I know is I was in England and I was surprised to see they had cans of 'Olde English' and I bought some naively expecting malt liquor but it was cider. How dare they misrepresent our culture like that
Was pretty good though. I like cider.

eek, never thought about that. I don't drink them much any more but they used to be a go-to. Now occasionally I'll get woodchuck, angry orchard, or other craft beers I don't remember the name of if I was getting one of those make your own 6 packs.
That tends to be the only hard ciders I drink, woodchuck, angry orchard, crispin, and names I don't remember.
I've been really into wine, but I still like sitting around a fire with friends and having a hard cider with a sidecar of bourbon or whiskey. My favorite fall drink. Except for white russians, my favorite year round drink.

That thing would probably give me cavities haha. It's obv not fermented with honey added or the alc% would be much higher. So they backsweeten with apple juice and then add honey. Blech. Do people actually enjoy these overly sweet ciders?

I get that, to me that's the same thing as a can of soda. I have a taste for the dry stuff though so I'm pretty biased on my ciders. I wish the market wasn't flooded with sweet cider, there needs to be more options available

I'm just drinking the $2 apple cider that is grocery market brand. It's more like apple juice than cider though and doesn't have much flavor at all. My go to juice is the Cranberry Raspberry combo.

its comparable too... well elderflower obviously. but more helpfully, not really anything I don't think. although even the berries are a touch floral, so I guess blueberry kinda, with a touch of rose is probably the closest, but doesn't really do it justice. elder is, well, elder... kinda like trying to explain what raspberry tastes like, it tastes like raspberry.

Is anyone else a fan of Weston's Ciders?
I particularly like Old Rosie. It's pretty different on draught compared to bottles (as the bottles are pasteurized and draught is unpasteurized) but both are good.
I don't live in the UK anymore, so I rarely get chance to drink it now.

Hmmm. Old Rosie. I'll have to remember that. Lady & I are going to a bar tomorrow night that's got like literally 300 beers to choose from, with 100-ish on tap. Many of which are international. They also have a ton of ciders so I'll have to keep my eye out for Old Rosie.

Not sure. I live in Eastern Europe so we have a very limited choice. Basically Strongbow, hugely expensive and not very good local "craft cider" or nothing (or "make your own", which I do) - we don't have Old Rosie here, but it may be available in other countries.

Right. Old Rosie undergoes malolactic fermentation, so it gives it a unique taste. A lot of other commercial UK cider is quite tasteless (for some people who don't like the taste of any alcoholic drinks but want to get drunk that's fine). Your special lady your lady friend may not find it to her taste. In that situation I'd recommend getting 1 Old Rosie plus 1 other and you can taste each other's.
Of the big 4 UK producers I'd rank them Westons > Thatcher's > Aspall's > Bulmer's.
with the first three quite close together and the 4th a bit behind. Note that the UK Bulmer's company (which makes e.g. Strongbow) is different to the now independent Irish Bulmer's company, whose main product is sold (in the UK at least) as Magner's - that's pretty good too.
Apart from those, basically any UK cider from a non-big-4 producer which is considered good enough to be imported to the USA or wherever you are, is going to be really good and should be given a try in preference to anything from the ranges of the above producers (with the exception of Old Rosie obv.)

Right. Old Rosie undergoes malolactic fermentation, so it gives it a unique taste. A lot of other commercial UK cider is quite tasteless (for some people who don't like the taste of any alcoholic drinks but want to get drunk that's fine). You're mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries! LOL!
I love old thread bumps (and sometimes other bumps, lol)
I have put a shot of cinnamon schnapps or fireball into a pear or apple cider and it fucking rocks!

Glad this got bumped as I tried one of the tastiest ciders ever recently:

It's a smooth apple cider with berry juice added. It has blackberry raspberry and strawberry juice in it, so damn delicious and refreshing. Easily my new favorite cider when it comes to taste, it's pretty much carbonated juice with 5% alcohol Only 14g sugar though which isn't too bad for how sweet it tastes.
Another great non cider I tried recently are these:

Quote:
Brewed with Pale and Wheat malts, Cluster hops, and flavored with a blend of blackberries, elderberries and loganberries.
It's really smooth and light on the hops, with a great rich berry taste. Never thought I'd like wheat beer, but that stuff has a really nice balanced taste. Also quite refreshing.

Pear ciders need to catch on more, they have a much more vibrant taste compared to most apple ciders.
Just picked up another 6 pack of these:

100% pear with blackberry juice, these can be a tad too sweet for my tastes sometimes but they are delicious.

Let me know what you think
I wish Ace sold 6 packs of their unfiltered blood orange cider around here, that one is also incredible. Only seen it in big bottles and pub taps though:

Yup, too bad that they aren't more common. I've had some other decent orange ones but nothing nearly as good as the Ace cider. More ciders should be unfiltered.

I like 2 Towns generally. First tried their "Bad Apple" on draft in Ashland Oregon @ the Granite Tap House. Well concealed for a 10% dry cider!
Dry cider is where it's at for me. I usually make my own with some good quality AJ, a little extra sugar (usually in the form of honey) and some champagne yeast. Sometimes I'll add a little holiday style spice, a few cloves and a cinnamon stick or what have you.
Since I have a 2 year old around now, I'm not creating my own as much as I'd like... so in a pinch, I've found "Golden State" ciders here in California offer a very nice dry cider in tall boy cans that are highly quaffable.

I tend to stick with the "Mighty Dry" but they're all decent.

Very cool. I bought a kit to make cider but never quite followed thru on that project. I basically get pressed apple juice from a friend then just drank the juice.

I used to make cider a lot a few years ago, my father has several fruit trees about the place; pears, apples, plums and a lot of random berries. Super easy, super cheap, and super good cider can be made by fermenting random mixtures of fruit.

Just picked up a 10 barrel sour sampler and noticed something weird, they replaced the lemon sour with a strawberry sour... But for some reason they kept the cucumber?!?

The cucumber is the weakest link in the sampler, and I loved the lemon. No idea why they replaced it this strawberry sour is great at least.

Bump for this delicious passionfruit sour ale:

It's one of the nicest sour ales I've tried, very strong tart tropical passionflower taste with a nice smooth sour finish.
