inoculate through alcohol pad?

Just curious. Could I place an alcohol pad over the injection port of a spawn bag as a sterilizing buffer? Has anyone else had the idea or tried it? Since the injection port is like 3/8" thick, my thoughts are that the needle will pass through the sterilizing pad but none of the alcohol or fibers of the pad will pass through the port. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Gotcha. Just a thought. I use a pop up room and a SAB, so I kind of figured I would be straight with that. Thanks!

well i would never suggest pushing a hot needle through alcohol....and it doesn't gt any more sterile then red hot so i'm going to say an experiment is not needed

Thanks. Hey, while I've got you here can you tell me your opinion on whether this looks like healthy mycelium and no cobweb or anything?

The first two are one bag and the second two another. First time with WBS/spawn bags.

I may do that eventually. It crossed my mind when I was thinking that was mold, it triggered me to drift into thoughts of extra sterility measures when inoculating. I tend to over analyze sometimes! Usually serves me well though.

I will usually layer 3 or four alcohol wipes and after flaming the needle I will wipe it down real quick right before I inject. I figured it can only add another layer of sterility and it cools the needle as well. I once heard somewhere that a needle too hot can cause problems somehow... don't remember what it was exactly and could have been misinformation but it got me in the habit. I guess doing that in a SAB is close to the same as injecting through an alcohol wipe though...
Hopefully I can graduate to isolating and agar medium relatively soon but taking my time.

it's a backwards step, alcohol sanitizes but does not sterilize...heat does both so i'd suggest just squirting a drop out to cool it or just wait
