Mine smelled like fresh mushrooms, and had no obvious signs of contamination, so I couldn't give you a valid point on whether or not that is a factor. My WBS however was extremely obvious, I just broke it up, let it recover, smelled like mushrooms, good to go.

You would see the difference in mycelium. Sometimes its hard to spot. Understand that spore syringes are usually not 100% clean so care must be taken when selecting cakes to be used as spawn.

Yes it can. Usually from drying out.

It's not enough if there's some dormant mold somewhere in the middle or that you can't identify from cube mycelium. Visually okay is not always okay. There's an inherent level of risk with doing anything with any medium that was inoculated with spores.

Most people with really high success rates use agar for grain spawn. I know my contam ratio with spores to grain was atrocious. Agar is the reason i didn't give up on this hobby.
As for contams, many molds are white and do not sporulate until fruiting conditions are introduced. Also whilenit would be rare to have a perfectly clean spore syringe, many people limit the chances by using as little solution as possible. Makes for better odds.

I wouldn't say your doomed to fail, just need to be careful. I would watch the cakes carefully after inoculation as sometimes mold will pop up then get overrun by the cubensis mycelium. But even though it is not easily seen at that point its still there. Use only a few drops of spore solution per hole and you will not only have better odds but you will stretch your spores more.
Contams happen. Anyone who says they don't get them are either lying or not growing much. If you decide you like this hobby then you will probably want to get into agar and then you will rarely see contams.

as a first time grower I had a syringe that was poorly stored, I couldn't get a clean jar ( many factors) but one jar pinned and I took a pin from that and now i'm on my second transfer to agar and will probably have that race for ever. Get a grow from it then find the best and put that to agar .. love agar!

A 20 quart tub would do fine with 6-8 cakes and 3 quarts of bulk sub IMO. Depending of course on the specific dimensions you should be able to hit a sub depth of 2.5" which is a fine depth for a mini mono. That would leave you 4-8 cakes to either fruit seperate or do another mini. Should be able to see some fruits from that.

My contam rate with spores has been pretty bad as well, I have a few clean agar cultures. My PE agar to grain has been performing gloriously! I would highly suggest taking clones from your MS grow, and moving on to better pastures like Pasty said.

yea, spawn is #1 deal breaker for grows. #2 i would say is FAE mishaps, either too much or too little
thats why casing is the shit
