What are the odds of one going into the desert and stumbling across peyote?

I'm not thinking about doing this at all for the record. I'm just wondering, since it's so supposedly rare, hypothetically, if some dude went into documented regions where peyote is known to exist -- what are the odds of him (or her) actually finding some? 10%? 5%? 1%?

I guess a lot would depend on how dense or sparse the local population there was and how long you spent looking. I'd love to go see them in habitat someday.

I rode with my friend once while he cut limbs off cacti in peoples yards trying to find one with peyote in it. I can't remember if there was any, I dont think so though.

I think a desert in the US, your chances would be slim. I think down in Mexico, you might have some luck if you go to the right place and know their habitat. I've never gone yote hunting though.

the closest I've come to finding peyote was when I found some peyote on GTA V
I ate it and Franklin turned into a rabid dog
I mauled like 4 people to death before the cops took me out

I think I read somewhere that deep South TX and northern Mexico would be the best spots to come across them

Yeah, that is what I read too. I think there are peyote farms in S. Texas for the NAC.

That might be a fun adventure
On a journey to Mexico with an AK-47 and camping supplies hunting for peyote
You'd probably get killed or worse but it would be fun while it lasted

The natives know, but it's likely they won't tell you.

Now I'm intrigued as to how this was popular in Native American use if it were so rare. I always assumed in most North American deserts suitable for it, the cactus would flourish.

Well it wasn't always rare
Too many people ripped it out of the ground now it's a threatened species

Problem is it's slow growing as fuck, in the wild even more than in cultivation. If harvested improperly it dies, and if harvested properly it still takes a long time to recover.

In cultivation it's possible to speed them up quite a bit though.
