artificial lighting
    #22071983 - 08/10/15 02:22 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

hey ,

I have been growing successfully for over 5 years with the coir/verm tek, I have been using rooms that are full of natural light with good results but will be relocating to a new place which bring up a concern of having to use artificial lights ! I have read through some threads stating the 6500k floros are best but I was wondering about if there is a proto call I can follow for setting up a proper environment ,??
maybe you guys who use lights can throw out there what has worked and what hasn't worked for you ??

thank you guys

thats a great question. I'm going to be fruiting in the next ten days in a small 3x4 closet, I was also going to use the 6500k. I'm interested in seeing what replies your thread gets

I've had great success using a simple lamp...it has a straight normal lamp on top and a flexible arm on the side...both hold normal size light bulbs.
I use CFL light bulbs in both...I took the plastic lamp shade off the top lamp...left the small plastic lamp shade on the side one.
This allows alot of indirect light and with the side lamp arm I can focus the light where I choose. If you couple this with a $4 timer (I got the lamp, bulb, and timer all from Wally-World) You spend less than $35 or so for the whole thing.
Be sure to use... 6500k "Daylight" color Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs and set your timer for 12 hours on...12 hours off.

You're talking about that walmart lamp aren't you?  My setup is the same except my timer goes to a power strip with like 5 lamps plugged in, the wal mart one and a bunch of clip-on lights.  6500k CFLs, 60w and 100w equivalents.    Only certain fixtures are rated for 100w equivalent CFLs so be careful, better to err on the side of caution with the 60w equiv.

I've been using a standard 4' twin bulb shop ballast with a combination of an Ott Lite full spectrum tube in one bracket and a Philips Aquarium & Plant light at 2700K.

I don't know if Ott Lite makes 48" T20 tubes any more.  But there are Philips bulbs at 6500K that will work fine.

good info, so indirect light is important? I have a lamp where its tall and the light shoots up out of a upside down shade, but no side lamp. I was going to put my tubs on the top shelf and line the ceiling and sides on top with a sticky side tinfoil. Do you think that would be adequate lighting?

I like the indirect light...that way it lights up the whole little room, but it's nice to have the arm so I can focus it directly at my current tubs...everyone does it a little differently:shrug:
I don't know if I would use foil...maybe someone else can weigh in...even though CFLs don't put out much heat...I would worry it would focus too much heat on my jars/tubs...that shelve is high up...and you have to remember that warm air rises...so it could get too hot up there quick
I'm going to buy some cheap plastic or metal shelves soon...that might be a good option for you too.
They are four shelves...adjustable and free standing.

I saw PussyFart link these http://www.amazon.com/Woods-0151-8-5-Inch-Reflector-150-Watt/dp/B000HHQ94C/ref=sr_1_8?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1439240111&sr=1-8&keywords=clip+on+light

They're a bit cheaper at Menards if you have those around.

Finding 6500k CFLs was a pita.  But I finally found them at Menards too!

Here's a picture of my closet set up.  Probably overkill but I think my lighting ran me less than $20, including bulbs and extension cords.

Ok cool, that kinda gives me the impression its good to focus the light directly on the tubs, so i'll invest in little on some adjustable clip lamps. I was leaning towards lamps up top anyways.:cookiemonster:

I believe if I go with two clip on lamps I wont need any help with lighting from foil. I originally was going to set up some shelves or racks like your suggesting, but for now the top shelves stay around 77 78f. Plus I dont think I need all those fruits..lol:rolleyes:
but once I start some edibles i'll want my set up in place. I have wood I can set something up too

If you can have the light a foot away shining right onto the fruits that's great.
