Baby chicken?

Is this was a young Laetiporus looks like? Found at the base of an old downed and rotted out hardwood tree. No stump here, just the shredded remains of one. I am asking because the spot is out of my way, but I will certainly go back for a COW.

it looks like it, IME.  i've watched them grow on a tree that's next to my normal route (from the road/my car) from primordia (?) that look like that.  but i never stopped so i'm going on what it looked like from a vehicle moving at 40mph.

the specimen i'm speaking of was growing from a tree thats right on the road and as such i didn't want to harvest it so i just watched it daily as i whizzed past.  it went from nubs like that to p large in just a couple three days.

i suppose you didn't see any previous evidence, IE old fruit bodies, anywhere?  sometimes the ones that grew previously get reduced to dust by bugs before they have a chance to get old so that's not always reliable.

Thanks. I will return tomorrow and hopefully no one nicks it. Apparently it is a fairly well known chanterelle spot for this area.

I've found the biggest problem with these round my way is, for want of a better expression, vandalism. Many a time I've found them fledging, only to come past the next day and find them on the floor. :frown:

Might be a Meripilus species.

They say there are two types of people when it comes to mushrooms; pickers and kickers.
