I read somewhere today that the somatic cells in mushrooms are haploid cells. I thought only the sex cells were haploid. Does anyone know the set up of somatic mushroom cells?

Spores (sex cells, if you please, but it is a stretch) of Basidiomycota are haploid. Mycelium which is the immediate product of the germination of the haploid spores is haploid and by itself weak, but viable. If (when) haploid mycelium from a spore encounters mycelium from another spore with a compatible mating type, they will anostomize and form a diploid, dikaryotic mycelium which is the kind that is typically observed.

Somatic cells of Basidiomycota can be either haploid or diploid depending on the circumstances. This is best answered in the FAQ.
