About To Hit The Road Am I Forgetting Something?
    #22069407 - 08/09/15 08:42 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

The Plan:

I have a WWOOFing membership (WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms). Basically what this means is, I travel anywhere in the world I want to that has an organic farm on WWOOF and I work on the organic farm in return for my organic food, shelter, internet access (usually), and whatever else they might want to add to it, but basically the essentials that every human should have. I have to pay for my traveling expenses and that is all.

My whole reason for doing this is because I simply want a better world. I want to fight Monsanto and do what I believe is right. I want to be free.

In a month I'm buying a bus ticket to Portland, Oregon (I currently live in Texas) and that is where I plan on beginning my first WWOOFing experience. After I leave the first farm I will move onto the next closest farm. You usually stay on the farm anywhere from a month to a year or so.

I'm 20 years old, no car, no bike. I have $400ish worth of natural plant things, adaptogens, entheogens, basically a bunch of organic (emphasis on organic) herbs/roots/seeds/nuts to help heighten my consciousness, boost my metabolism, help protect my body, help my mind to adapt to the new environments, etc.

What I'm Taking With Me:

I have a good backpack with a 3 liter water hydration pack thing that you put in the backpack and a good water filter that you put at the end of the hose (sawyer mini) and a quarter pound of shungite crystals that I'm putting in the water pouch to further purify the water.

I'm making my own deodorant with this recipe (I have plenty of all ingredients):
6 Tbl coconut oil
1/4 cup (4 Tbl) baking soda
1/4 cup (4 Tbl) arrowroot
lime and lemongrass essential oils

I have a pound of chia seeds, a half pound of milk thistle seeds, and a quarter pound of goji berries to eat.

To wash my body I have 6 bars of dr. bronner's tea tree oil hemp soap and a big bottle of their liquid tea tree oil hemp soap to wash my hair. I also have a pound of soapnuts I will be using to wash my clothes. I have 3 new tubes of Earthpaste (natural toothpaste) and I have 4 toothbrushes made out of bamboo.

Natural Condoms(;

A very powerful stun gun/flashlight for protection.

I'm keeping my clothes in a different bag which consists of:

Hemp Shoes
Steel Toe Waterproof Boots
2 LongJohn bottoms
2 LongJohn Tops
1 sweatshirt
1 sweater
1 Carhart Jacket
7 T-shirts
4 Jeans
10 pairs of socks
8 underwear
5 Flannel shirts

My plants/herbs/seeds and stuff that I was talking about consists of:

Amanita Muscaria European Caps
Cebil Vilca
Wild Dagga pure flower petals
Ashwagandha Root
Comfrey Leaf
Damiana to smoke
Elder Berries for spiritual protection
Eleuthero Root
Fresh Chaga Mushroom with the outer bark
Black Maca Powder
Slippery Elm Bark
White Willow Bark
Shilajit

In my spare time:

I carve pipes made out of wood (peace pipes usually), carve simple designs in them, stain them with coffee, and then do simple paint jobs on them. I wrap hemp cord around parts of them and hang feathers and stones on them and whatnot. If I have the opportunity to get ahold of crystals I make jewelry with them with the hemp.

So guys, any advice? any questions? Am I forgetting anything?

How to get started in bulk:
Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker
BOD's Simple as FUCK Still Air Box
PastyWhyte's Easy Agar Tek
Munchauzen's Cultivation Video Series
How EvilMushroom666 Prepares His Grains (I use jars with Synthetic Filter Discs)
What is G2G? (Grain-to-Grain)
Damion5050's Coir Tek (I use 5.5 - 6 quarts of water instead of 4. Also ignore step 13 and ignore the monotub completely. The only purpose of this tek is to show you how to make a simple substrate. I also add gypsum to it but not necessary)
Spitball's Monotub Tek (A liner isn't necessary but is useful)
Use 6500k lights throughout the whole process. When you wake up, turn the light on. When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

Thank you(: yes, I love what Portland is doing to fight against GMOs and the whole place is so open minded. Only been there one other time.

Hey mate, I did the same around Europe/India  for a year in 2014. The biggest thing I learnt was pack light!
Don't get attached to things, change clothes with the seasons. You'll learn all that pretty quick though.

As far as volunteering goes, be wary of people who try to take advantage. Remember it's an exchange of skills and culture, not just work for board/food. Don't hesitate to walk away and find another host if you feel the situation is unfair. The review system is invaluable for finding a decent host, and when you build up a good review base yourself, you will have no trouble finding a host.

Another collective aside from WWOOFING is HelpX. This has a huge variety of hosts not just limited to organic farming, although definitely the organic/self sustainable home stays are the most rewarding.
I found a lot of amazing hosts who now choose to advertise through HelpX instead of WWOOF for various reasons.

I can't wait to get back on the road myself around Australia and discover some friendly hosts around here!

You'll never look back man!

This sounds like short term thinking...

How do you plan to live in the future?
Are you going to rely on other people your whole life?
How do you have a family with this kind of lifestyle?

This sounds like short term thinking: That's probably because this is a post of what I'm about to do next month. Good observation though.

How do you plan to live in the future: By helping to protect the environment so that hopefully we may continue to live on this planet.

Are you going to rely on other people your whole life?: Are you? I'm breaking away from the system, what are you doing?

How do you have a family with this kind of lifestyle: I don't.

Thank you for the tips and advice!(: I'm looking very forward (mixture of emotions obviously) to this. I did it one other time when I went to Eugene Oregon except I wasn't WWOOFing, just traveling with a tent and sleeping bag.

I'm still working on my luggage and deciding what clothes to take and whatnot, just sort of threw something in here to see how it would sound and see what feedback and edits I would get for my clothing and stuff

Are you really breaking away from the system if you are just travelling to different parts of it?
It seems you need a system in place for your lifestyle.

I don't want to break away from the system, I'd rather try to improve it.

Is stopping my mindless consumerism and traveling the world to plant organic produce to help organic farmers, bring real food to tables, and replenishing the soil not improving the system? I express the matters I find important publicly when I travel as well.
I fail to see why you say I need a system for my lifestyle. I need 2 legs and someone with an organic farm. If I am fortunate enough to live long enough to where I should have planned for the future in hopes of retirement one day because I am too old to work then that means that my job was complete. At this rate the human race won't last another 30 years...not 99% percent of it anyways.
Regardless, I don't really care if we win or lose, I just want to keep fighting. I know we all die some day, that's part of life. I believe in life after death and if I truly believe that, then why would I waste so much energy planning my life when I could be living it?
Yes, I see where you're coming from and I completely respect you for choosing to live your life that way as not all souls and minds are the same and we all have different intuitions. But when I said did anyone have any questions or advice, I was regarding that in terms of what I should bring, what I was bringing, or any questions people may have about the plants I am taking as they are quite intriguing some of them. I did not mean for people to come in here and question me about where I am going with my life as that is none of your business sir.

That's my point, an organic farm doesn't exist by itself, they are just another part of society. They all sell things to people.. That is consumerism...
Sorry, I didn't mean to come here and criticize.

Check out Cedar Rock Farm, they are like a 40 minute drive south of Portland.
Some of the nicest people I've ever met, I'm sure they would have you.

It is indeed consumerism, it's just a type of consumerism that I feel morally right about  but what you say does make sense and no worries(:

I appreciate the advice though and I am sure you meant good intentions with it and that is all that matters in my book(:

I know it's probably too late, but I want to share my perspective as a backpacker: Do you really need to carry six bars of Dr. Bronner's on Day 1? You can get that anywhere in Portland and there's no sales tax.

When you're in the city, be sure to visit People's Food Co-op on SE 21st south of Division. Have fun

It's the only soap I use and I purchased from amazon so 6 was my only option at the time because I neeeded soap ASAP anyways
I know it seems a little overkill
And I a farm offered for me to come to Arizona so I think that's where I'm going instead. Just go with the wind
