Id: Boletus?
    #22069048 - 08/09/15 07:33 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:Found in woods on path, around hardwoods

Location: Southwestern Ohio

Gills: Tubes, yellow, bruises black

Stem: Redish/yellowish-some white, bruises dark blue

Spore print: Olive Green

Scent: None

Cap: 3cm, stem: 4mm wide/3cm long

Whether I am right or wrong about this being a Boletus. I feel myself getting much better at this after only a week of having this hobby. :-)

i have found boletes extremely hard to narrow down to a precise specie.  Just when you think you have it narrowed down, you find another with the same attributes.  Or there are two keys or guides with conflicting info on attributes.

First I thought Boletus Bicolor. But now I am thinking boletus sensibilis, because of the fast, almost instant bruising of the gills and stem. Any thoughts on species?

yeah, taking small boletes down to species, like guyute said, is a bit of a fool's errand. It could be many different ones with the attributes you mentioned. Could be Boletus bicolor. Could be Boletus fraternus. Could be Hortiboletus rubellus.
