What do you enjoy about the Grateful deads Music and the band overall?
I really like the freedom of the music and the wide range of sounds and such!! Hard to really compare a band to them.
Also is anyone just getting into them like me? Ive only been listening to them for like a year and think the music is just awesome!!

sometimes i think these guys were just average musicians but just took a lot of acid which made them GREAT! All my favorite songs Alligator, the other one, spanish jam, were all made when they were on heavy acid! thats where the magic happens!

They have music you can just move around to. It all has a very positive push to it's sound. To be honest though, I didn't understand it until I listened to it while tripping once.

Archive.org has over 9000 dead shows I believe, though whoever owns the rights is stingy and lst I checked only audience shows were up for downloads.
But you can stream all the soundboard shows besides commercially released ones, and there are some quality aud recordings too.

The best thing about the Greatful Dead is the music is honest. Each rendition is unique as the passing moment it resides within. It's what music is all about.

What do I love about the grateful dead?
Everything! I love how they combined numerous genres/sounds to create their own unique sound, I love the family feel one gets at shows. I like their musical exploration. The dead has been a constant in my musical repertoire for many years, it always comforts me when I need it, puts me in a great mood, heals my soul.
I listen to all sorts of music, but nothing tops the dead for me.
Some shows I suggest.
5/15/77 10/11/77 11/24/78 4/22/69 2/11/70 5/15/70 2/19/71 12/6/73 6/16/74 10/27/79 11/9/79 9/6/80 10/9/82 10/10/82 10/14/83 10/15/83 10/21/83 6/14, 6/15, 6/16/85, all the greek theatre shows from 81-89, I really like those 85 shows though. 7/29/88 10/29/85 11/1/85 11/2/85 12/30/86 7/2/88 all the Hampton 87 shows all the Alpine Valley 89 shows 10/8/89 & 10/9/89 Warlocks! most of spring tour 90 is amazing as well
those shows are a good place to start.

i love that live they really stepped up their music. one of my favorite things about them was brent mydland. he was an amazing keyboard player who pushed the band to crazy limits. and then with jerry's leads and bobby's amazing rhythm guitar style, phil's awesome bass playing, and mickey and billy's drumming, they were an amazing fucking band. i love the grateful dead with all my heart. i'm actually wearing a dead shirt right now.

Despite the whole "words cannot describe it" aspect one of the major things I have articulated from listening to the dead is how vital their role is in renforcing improvisation in popular music.
Sure the jazz scene had it's era but The Greatful Dead created an entire community that has persisted for over 50 years based around true freedom of expression in music.
It introduced a generation to concepts that are found in every form of native music around the world, such as the "nothing" rhythm in Korean shamanic music and the drum language that is found in all traditional African music for example.
It created a context for truly American music to express these same limitless themes, creating entire universes in a single note.

Listening to them is akin to the sort of presence one has when digesting styles similar to jazz or indian ragas. The notes are picked right from the air. It is fun, light and has complexity disguised within its simplicity. In my opinion, I believe that the group will have a larger following generations from now. I think the quote on quote "average" music listener will intuitively understand what their music was about as opposed to now in 2015 when people either get it or don't.
It's just preference I guess - I just see more tolerance for it in the future. Real inventive production on some of those records from the seventies too! Almost rivals the Beatles (imo)... almost

I love pretty much everything about the band. The thing that stands out the most is how timeless their music is. In the future when people think about music from the 1900's they will think of the Dead. I listen to them about 300 days a year and it only gets better and better.
Their concerts are some of the most fun places a person could be. The people are beautiful and they really know how to party. I love hangin with everybody and wandering the lots before the show starts. The Grateful Dead is rich in history and they're even responsible for a whole new kind of culture that is still around today. I could go on and on.

They were a band that used a lot of LSD in their musical process...compare that with the Allman Brothers that, according to Greg, weren't that impressed with the Dead's abilities...they used mushrooms alot in their music. He also said that they ate extracted psilocybin pills like candy during rehearsals..in his book....Their music, to me...seems like a mushroom trip...flowing but angsty.
Lol... LSD and that dancing bear style (feel good music) seems just like a LSD trip ...I love that energy that surrounds their music...they bring out the best in people, for the most part.
