hows this for a reason to OP's question what other bands can you take any ole random show, end up in tears within minuites, be in and out of tearing up throughout the entirety of the show and be spinning around kicking balloons around your home
catching my breath from that terrapin closer hot damn that was a hell of a show

Despite the whole "words cannot describe it" aspect one of the major things I have articulated from listening to the dead is how vital their role is in renforcing improvisation in popular music.
Sure the jazz scene had it's era but The Greatful Dead created an entire community that has persisted for over 50 years based around true freedom of expression in music.
It introduced a generation to concepts that are found in every form of native music around the world, such as the "nothing" rhythm in Korean shamanic music and the drum language that is found in all traditional African music for example.
It created a context for truly American music to express these same limitless themes, creating entire universes in a single note.

Listening to them is akin to the sort of presence one has when digesting styles similar to jazz or indian ragas. The notes are picked right from the air. It is fun, light and has complexity disguised within its simplicity. In my opinion, I believe that the group will have a larger following generations from now. I think the quote on quote "average" music listener will intuitively understand what their music was about as opposed to now in 2015 when people either get it or don't.
It's just preference I guess - I just see more tolerance for it in the future. Real inventive production on some of those records from the seventies too! Almost rivals the Beatles (imo)... almost

i remember listening to terrapin station on acid before i was a deadhead. that was such a magical experience. no band has ever taken me deeper into my subconscious, except for streetlight manifesto.

I love pretty much everything about the band. The thing that stands out the most is how timeless their music is. In the future when people think about music from the 1900's they will think of the Dead. I listen to them about 300 days a year and it only gets better and better.
Their concerts are some of the most fun places a person could be. The people are beautiful and they really know how to party. I love hangin with everybody and wandering the lots before the show starts. The Grateful Dead is rich in history and they're even responsible for a whole new kind of culture that is still around today. I could go on and on.
