Keep Your Goals to Yourself 2

When deciding upon a new objective to improve the course of your life, whether it be weight loss, quitting smoking, drinking less, or whatever else, announcing your goals to others might seem like a way to dedicate yourself to their accomplishment while seeking encouragement and support from your peers. However, studies stretching as far back as 1933 have found that doing so actually reduces the likelihood of meeting your objectives. The reason? Your brain doesn't distinguish between the neurochemical reward of imagining your success and the neurochemical reward of actually succeeding, such that simply discussing your plans confers the feeling of satisfaction you'd otherwise be motivated to pursue through your actions.
I found this really interesting.
From Psychological Science:
Quote:
When other people take notice of one’s identity-relevant behavioral intentions, one’s performance of the intended behaviors is compromised. This effect occurs both when the intentions are experimenter-supplied and when they are self-generated, and is observed in both immediate performance and performance measured over a period of 1 week. It does not emerge when people are not committed to the superordinate identity goal. Other people’s taking notice of one's identity-relevant intentions apparently engenders a premature sense of completeness regarding the identity goal.

Yup I remember reading this quite a while ago. My wife and I started a new diet and tried to keep it a secret. Problem is eventually people wonder why you are always refusing food and not eating birthday cake or something and eventually you have to tell them you are just watching what you eat.
Down 38 pounds though but haven't really told anyone. I figure it will be more rewarding just having people let me know they notice eventually.

Also read it. Can't do it though, I get way to excited about all my plans so I end up talking about them constantly

This is really interesting.
I always feel inclined to share with friends and family my plans to improve my mind, body & spirit health. Maybe I should keep it to myself from now on and just...do it!
