GROSS VID ALERT
Is this "not really that bad" and just a shock to my own cultural values? Do I do things just as bad but only in a different way?
Or is this truly fucked up and without comparison?

How do you think a cow becomes steak? Not saying it's great, but we do have to eat just like that shark, and its better to cut it up and disperse the value so it doesn't go to waste.

Seriously?
Maybe by not being cut in slices from ass to head while still alive (for starters).

I've seen so much of this kind of thing from China and other countries in that region of the world. One of my good friends is half Chinese and has explained to me that the reason the animals are eaten/cooked alive is because they value 'freshness' so much.
I think it's atrocious that animals are treated in this way; it seems the absolute height of cruelty to me. However it pretty much falls in line with Humanity's general rape and pillage of the earth, and I think if we each asked ourselves the question, very few of us could attest to having no part in it. It's just that much more visual/obvious when we see it in action like this. So much more (and possibly worse) is done behind closed doors, I suspect.

It's the same China that kills black rhinos and elephants for their tusks, leaves the bodies to rot, and grinds the bone into powder and sells it as miracle aphrodisiacs in Shanghai boutiques. It's fucking nauseating. I have found China and the Chinese to have very few scruples in general. They are beyond the pale when it comes to self-servitude, for which they will seemingly do anything they feel like.

Do you know if it's mostly the city dwellers that are like this or does it extend into the villages as well?

Well, my Dad has done some traveling in China, and says the Chinese are nutso about alternative medicine -- various snake oils as far as I can tell. They actually sell powdered rhino horn in department store boutiques in the major malls in Shanghai and Beijing. I would guess that it is big in the country, too, but I'm not sure how they would acquire it. But very big in the cities, even among a supposedly educated middle class.
