Mushroom kit not growing
    #22066533 - 08/09/15 10:25 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyone,

I'm a first-time grower. I bought an allegedly "foolproof" mushroom grow kit that doesn't seem to be working out. It's a psilocybin cubensis kit that uses a straw-based substrate and a layer of casing soil under a plastic terrarium lid.

The mycelium grew throughout the straw perfectly fine, with no trace of contaminants, but after adding the (sterilized) casing soil and starting the light cycle things seem to have gone to shit. For the first few days the mycelium started growing up around the edges, as expected, but then green mold started overtaking everything and the growing process has completely stalled for the past two weeks.

I think my mistake may have been in following the instructions too closely, actually. The guidebook that came with the kit advised me to mist the soil 1-3 times daily -I kept the soil moist, rather than damp, but after doing some further research I realize I was probably still overwatering them (a lot of people say to just mist the inside of the dome, instead). Plus the instructions never even mentioned anything about fresh air exchange! I stopped watering the soil about a week ago, and I dried things out by cutting a small hole in the lid and attaching a laptop fan to it for a few days. Still, nothing's happening anymore. Oh, the temperature's been perfect this whole time, by the way, kept at a steady 24-28 degrees Celsius.

I was hoping to glean whatever advice and support I can get from more experienced growers here. This has been a really frustrating and disappointing experience so far, and as a final hail-Mary I wanted to get some outside input before I pitched everything out. Is there anything at all I can do at this point, or is it a lost cause entirely? Please let me know, any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's probably a lost cause entirely. Depends on how bad it is really. If the contamination is minimal and just in a small area you can try cutting it away. Will probably only work if it was fully colonized before hand though. If there were uncolonized parts, it's most likely just going to come back.

Upon seeing the pictures, it's a lost cause.

My advice: don't buy a kit next time. Read up on one of the teks here and buy everything you need yourself. Costs less and if something fucks up, you can always retry, usually without really buying more supplies. With a kit you have to buy a whole new kit.

I've read that the green mold will significantly reduce my yield, but I may still get something. At this point I'm not really concerned with future harvests, I'd be content with even one small flush.

this

throw it out, man.

Go on youtube and type in "lets grow mushrooms!" and just follow that exactly and you will be good.

Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

It's just a shot away..

Thanks for the info, man! I've tossed the kit and ordered some new spores. Just another green mold related question -is my closet permanently contaminated now? I don't have anywhere else to grow, unfortunately.

It is probably no more contaminated now than it was before.  PF Tek.  Do what RR says in the videos you were already directed to.  You will get plenty of 'shrooms for personal use and gifts.  If you are going industrial I would say, "don't."

Well first you have to understand trich and other contams pretty much exist everywhere. Unless you build your own clean room and are very aggressive with cleaning every surface and even the air, including your body/clothes entering, it's pretty much impossible to find a place that doesn't have that problem.

That's why we use the teks on this site. Done right, it can virtually make it impossible to get a contam. We don't give the trich a chance to start growing on the substrate.

So yes your closet is contaminated, but it doesn't mean you can't successfully grow shrooms. I can't speak for the kit you're using, I have no idea how clean any of the shit they send is or how sterile the techniques are. Even if you were to list all the steps, it still wouldn't help any, because the first one is something you can't know. You just have to take their word for the fact that it's sterile. It may not be.
