microwave "perssure cooker"
    #2206635 - 12/29/03 02:28 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

i dunno if anyone else has seen the pressure cookers that you stick in a microwave. (if no one knows what im talking about i can post a link to one on ebay)... but anyways, one thats 2.5qts (not very big) is onyly $18 shipped from people on ebay. Does anyone know if thay actually work? Has anyone actually used one for sterilization? $18 isnt a whole lot for something like that.

I've never heard of this either, but how many jars are you planning to put in a 2.5 qt?
I have a 12 and it will do maybe 5 quart jars.

Just a thought buddy

If you have jars with metal lids, that PC would be completely useless.

microwave pressure cooker could be good for casing materials and sterilising verm ext, as well as half pint plastic lidded jars.

I?m pretty sure that this is not an actual pressure cooker, but rather a steamer.

So the question that comes to my mind first is why not just but a PC? But I know what the answer will be: "money."

All I can tell you from my personal experience is that your success with mycoculture, like so many other things, will be directly proportional to what you put into it. While time and effort is certainly part of that input, alas, so is money.

i used to have one of those, it will work. that is unless you do like me and decide to cook up a pot of beans, and one gets stuck in the vent. i had to get a new microwave because of that. as long as your stuff is in jars or something else pc'able you will be fine

I own a microwave that you can stick metel in. Its very odd cuz my friend has the exact same model and his can't do this. Im always heating up stured food with the spoon or fork or even tin foil covering it. It fucking owns.

try some steal wire. i garuntee youll see sparks, and if u really wanna have some fun let the wire touch the veiwing glass thing... i did this when i was young, very exciting, my mom didnt agree.

also i hear steal wool can give u quite the show.

thin pointy metal causes problems. i never had a spark with a metal jar lid.
if you put your jars in an autoclave bag with some water in it and seal it up it acts like a pressure cooker and helps the jars to stay moist. dont have any idea what sort of pressure builds up but steam escapes through the filter. the bag blows up like a balloon

how can pressure build up when steam can escape through the filter ? I thought pressure can only build up when the steam can not escape. Or at least it can not be a lot of pressure I think !?

If gas is being created faster than it can be released pressure will build up. All pressure cookers have a release, it's just a controlled release.

Ah.. I just read what you were replying to, I figured it was the original post. Yeah, A bag isn't going to hold any pressure, NOTHING like a pressure cooker. They were probably using PF tek and that's why it seemed to work for them.

Peace - @cro

"I mean a bag of plastic could not stand a lot of pressure, can it ?"
actually they can especially those autoclave bags. one way of testing is to boil a sealed bag with water in the micro and have a thermometer in some boiling water outside. the second you turn off the micro stick the thermometer under the bag and read the highest temp you get. 121C is 15psi other temps can be worked out.
plastic coke bottles can withstand huge pressures but weaken quickly with heat the autoclave bags withstand heat far better
