Mycobags & Colonization
    #2206521 - 12/29/03 12:53 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hypothetically, if someone injected pink buffalo spores in a mycobag, and plantasia mystery in another, and they placed the bags in complete darkness. While keeping them around 70-75 degrees, how long would you expect signs of colonization to take? At 12 days, should something start to be seen?

Thanks for any replies.

Yes at 70-75F the spores should germinate and show some growth by that long...I recently had some .5 pint jars colonize complete in 1 week using millet flour/verm with polyfill lids.

for faster colonization incubate at about 85F.

hypothetically

So if nothing at all has shown up, no signs of contamination either. What would you say?

I'd put my early money on bacteria. Where did you get yer syringe?

Let those bags go for another week, by then you will know if it's bacteria or other contam. If it smells like vinegar or sweet rotten meat, you have bacteria. If nothing shows by then reinnoculate. Make sure your using good spores and let your bag cool before noc up.

The bags still smell like cerial or whatever kind of grain stuff they put in the bags. The spores were ordered from myco supply. When he was lookin at the syringes, there didn't seem to be many spores, and the ones he did see looked clumped together. He ordered 2 more syringes from sporesource. And will re-innoculate the bags with the new syringes, if it turns out to just be a couple bad syringes.

What has your luck been with these distributers?

I have not tried any of those sorces or mycobag style bags at all.

The best way to get spores is to trade with other shroomites:thumbup:

Ralpster's and sporeworks have good reputations around here, but I always used the hawks eye, and I love those guys!

I've had no prob "re-innoculating" pf jars that didn't germinate. No need to waste substrate and time sterilizing if there is no contam.

but like I said I don't use no damn bags.

I smell cerial and it looks soggy, waited 14 days, no signs either,
Thinking of giving up? Forgetting to shake spore syring might make a differnece?

If it looks wet it's too wet. If it's a myco bag you made dont use so much water nest time. bacterial contams at first look like wetness, then it turns to goo, and smells rank.

I'm putting my money on bad syringes.
How much of the syringe did you put in?
Where were the majority of the spores distributed within the bag?

* It is very important to mix the grain based bags before use. As is they are shipped hard as a rock, after mixing they become more airy, almost compost like and growth is greatly improved. Mixing will also break the vacuum in the bag allowing for better filtered air exchange and improving results. This is the most common and overlooked problem which is easily corrected in less than 5 minutes.
Good luck!

Alright, I got a new mycobag in the mail today. Should I try to hit it with these iffy syringes or wait for my B+, and Lipa Yai to come in by mid-week? I was thinking about just using the B+. I'm guessing it's the easiest to grow. Or you think I should use one of the other strains I have?

I'm gonna make sure I do everything right this time... which I thought I did last time.

1. Fire and rubbing alcohol on the syringe sharp.
2. Shake up bag & syringe
3. Insert sharp into bag
4. Inject 1cc of spore solution into bag
5. Keep in dark, around 85 degrees

And that will get me to colonization hopefully, right? Anything I missed?

I would defenitly wait for your good spores to come. After all think about how crappy it would be if just as the good ones are arriving your realizing that the ones you used were contaminated and that now its a waste.....if only you had waited...youll mutter those words over and over for awhile.believe me.

Alright I'll wait. But which strain should I try? I only have 1 bag. B+ or Lipa Yai?

The latter is probably the more potent, and I've heard quite contam resistant. But the B+ is a less potent more begginer friendly strain.

I'm leaning toward the Lipa Yai.

Thanks for everybodies input. The Shroomery is good.
