Ever just pop a seed into the ground?

I did that for shits and giggles and now I have a pretty healthy looking sprout coming up. It gets its own water source and just the right amount for me not to do anything to it. Just fascinated by this

A healthy sprout really doesn't mean much. Seeds have everything they need to produce a healthy sprout and in most cases even grow their first sets of true leaves with nothing more than moisture to set the thing off. In my experience without babying it (providing the exact conditions it needs to thrive) it won't last more than a month or so and will spend half that time just getting sicklier and dying.
This is true for most every plant I have ever grown including but not limited to, weed.

Ground doesn't necessarily mean there's nutrition. Actually if you popped a seed into ground where nothing else was, it's probably a sign there's really not much. There are plenty of bare spots in my yard where things grow sparsely at best, but keeping my garden weed free? Practically impossible. Shit grows where the conditions are right to allow for sustained growth.

oh, i was thinking more in terms of that there's more nutrition in the ground than say if you germinated in a paper towel. i don't know why my train of thought related that to it but i am getting pretty tired here.

You could say that but it really does depend on the soil and the plant too of course since different plants can have vastly different needs.

Generally speaking this would be the case as there is pretty much 0 nutrition in a paper towel, but that doesn't always mean the ground is really that much better. Depending on what's happened to it, soil can have next to no nutrition, just like the paper towel. If not even weeds are growing in a patch of soil, it's a pretty safe bet it's because there's next to nothing there. Weeds are weeds because they can survive on so little compared to other plants. Half the weeds I deal with are entirely drought proof (the usual sure fire killer of plants). Long after my plants have died from no water, the weeds will still be as green and flourishing as ever.

for instance, my lawn is suffering because of how often it rains here. the rain and water flushes everything from the soil and i would say that before there were homes here the land was largely pine forest and scrubland. scrubland is known here for having white sandy soil and not a whole lot grows there that doesn't have a deep root system, like grass for instance.

Haha yeah I dont expect it to live very long. Have a feeling something will come eat it. Just excited because this is the first one thats ever decided to grow. Rain almost doesnt exist out here anymore haha I think thats why this is great to me. If it did survive, itd be a nice and big sativa!

I hate people who think it's so cool to just randomly plant weed seeds everywhere. They think they're being cool and edgy, but they're fucking up the grows of people who actually know what they're doing.

I'm guilty of that, maybe not the so cool part, but me and a few friends found a wooded area no one really went into and planted a pretty big patch. They were doing well, but it was before I had any real experience successfully growing any kind of plant. Soil wasn't rich enough and the canopy blocked most of the Sun light. They went a couple months, but were severely stretching, to the point of just laying down. Was pretty much doomed from the start. It was supposed to be a guerrilla grow between me and 2 other friends.
Plan was to grow a bunch, discard the males and keep only a handful of the strongest females. And beyond that basically just let nature take it's course. Not a single one survived. Me and one of the friends were convinced the third went back and took them to grow at his house or destroyed them for whatever reason, but after getting into gardening I realized why it failed.
I live in Texas though. guerrilla growing or just risking a raid at any time, is the only way to grow. One of my wife's friend's mother who was an avid gardener grew a single plant once, not just a sprout, I mean it stood as tall as I did, just hadn't quite reached the budding state. She destroyed it in a huge fit of (justifiable) paranoia. Some city worker came to the door to check on a complaint that she had standing water in a kiddie pool or tires or something. As I recall, there was a huge panic and she stalled long enough to shove the plant into the son's window to have him hide, and after the worker did his inspection and left, it was promptly destroyed. Kinda sad really. She'd lived with that paranoia for months. It was gonna start budding any day.
First and only real weed plant I've ever seen (seen plenty of sproutlings and babies)

Well that's a bit different. That just sounds like an unsuccessful grow, I was more referring to the folks that plant weed in people's flower beds and shit

There are plenty of things you can use to deter critters from whatever you plant outside. I grew some outdoor ganja years ago when I had the land to do so, I used some spray for deer which were the biggest threat in that area for pot. It was some type of pepper spray, smelled really spicy too. Never had problems with deer, or any other animals, stuff worked well.

I've heard of using pepper spray. Not like Pepper Spray, but you know what I mean
