Attempting my first grow using a kit but mycelium has stopped growing
    #22061224 - 08/08/15 12:27 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guy's I am attempting to grow mushrooms for the first time using a kit. I realize now the kit may not have been a good choice but i guess hind sights always 20/20. The mycelium seemed to be growing properly but very slowly for the first 2 weeks and then it stopped and hasn't grown much in a week. I am growing it in a bag in a box the kit came with. Today I lifted the bag to check it for the first time and there seems to be a lot of water at the bottom of the bag. There is mycelium growing lower in the substrate that I  could see when I checked the bag but the top of the substrate is only about 40% covered. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to poke holes in the bottom of the bag to drain the water? Or if it's best to leave it. I was also wondering if I should wait and hope the mycelium grows more before adding the casting soil or if it's best to do it now? I'm sorry these questions are so noob I have been searching for related threads and haven't found the answers I need. I have increased the air exchange for the past week but it hasn't seemed to help. One issue might be that I haven't been able to keep the temperature very constant. It's varied between 82-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

82-90 is too high. You are probably seeing metabolites.
Continue to wait and keep it in a room at 72F. In the meantime, post a picture here so we can see what we see.

I would go ahead and set your sights on something new now so that this thing isn't such a bummer.  If it's bacterial enough to stop growing it probably won't respond well to anything else you do to it.  Get something else going while you see what this one does.

werd.

*edit
I guess I was hoping it slowed down due to being at 90F, but OP if you should start your own jars if you have the ability to do so. I don't know why I was being so optimistic for once.

Given that it probably is bacterial, go ahead and watch it fail just so that you don't live your whole life wondering what could've been.   Throw it away and get it outside at the first sign of any mold, or once you're sufficiently sure that it looks disgusting.  It's a learning experience too, will help you catch bacteria sooner before you mix it with everything else.

Eh, I just like to set them up so they won't be disappointed later.  Maybe lowering the temps will help.  Maybe the damage is already done.

Thanks for the speedy reply! I will definitely lower the temp then. The kit suggested a temp of 82-85 but I guess I should have done a lot more research. Here's a photo of it now.if it is bacteria would the main issue be the heat? Or would the extra water in the bag cause problems too? I'm guessing there is no point adding the casting soil unless the mycelium speeds up? Thanks again for all the help

The combination of the two is the real killer.  That's a little blurry so I could be wrong but that doesn't look good.  It looks a little too bright of a white, which usually indicates mold.  I hope it's just blurry though.

Whoa, it's a straw kit?
Did you mix the straw into an already colonized substrate or is that just how it came to you?

If that straw was sterilized and the whole bag is like that, you just fucked yourself by opening it. That will trich out.

If it is pasteurized though and was mixed with clean spawn then ok just let it do its thing at a lower temp. Get more irons in the fire while you wait.
If you need a tek or more help just ask.

Sorry it's probably just cuz I'm such a noob but I don't quit understand what you mean. The straw substrate and spawn came separately. I sterilized the substrate then mixed in the spawn once the substrate was at room temperature. I think the mycelium is so white cuz I screwed up and had the flash on when I took the picture. Not sure if that may have screwed it even more.  I am guessing I would be better off not using a kit in the future?

How did you "sterilize" the straw?
The way your OP made things sound was that you had a partially colonized tub of grain or something that was going to be cased.
My advice is pretty much the same though, lower the temp, wait, and get more projects going in the meantime. You also should have mixed the straw in with the spawn more thoroughly, it looks like most of it is just sitting on top.

It was sterilized by microwaving it with water in the bag. Sorry that I didn't give the best description. The straw was mixed in pretty well I think. It's just there is a lot  of straw....but I could be wrong. Thanks for the help guys I will just have to wait. I'm not sure if I will try again for a while feeling pretty discouraged and worried I'll just end up wasting more money. Although I assume it will be cheaper to buy the supply's individualy in the future. I think I'll need to do a lot more reading before I make another attempt but I really appreciate all your help:-)

Oh yeah it's definitely fucked if you microwaved straw.  Straw has to be pasteurized at 140-160F for ~90 minutes.  You can bet the microwave didn't do that.

Yeah I'm gonna go ahead and revert to fully trusting my eyes, and say, fuck watching what that does, just get it out of there before it becomes a health risk to you.  I'm pretty sure now that all that white shit is not cubensis mycelium but mold that hasn't sporulated yet.  You don't want to wait til it does, by that point you're already breathing it in.

Bummer about the crappy kit instructions, but if you ever want to try again and get good results, you're in the right place.
