A Shit Show Among a Sea of Endless Shit Shows * 4
    #22060943 - 08/07/15 10:54 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Sorry but I'm just going to move this.  Let's try again over here, shall we?:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22072628

Quote:

"Wait,"

"A coir tek, but why?", you might find yourself asking. "Don't we all already know how to do coir?", you continue to ponder aloud, with each question only giving rise to a myriad of others in a harmonized union of confusion and intrigue that leaves your heart racing.  Luckily your suspense is not without reprieve!

Why yes, my fine friends, acquaintances, eager learners, and awkward relatives, we are most assuredly experiencing an abundance of similar information, and therein lies the problem.

If you started growing by learning coir then you probably learned the bucket tek.  It's a good tek.  It gets the job done and it's straightforward.  But what the bucket tek isn't, is neither proper pasteurization nor proper sterilization.  You probably think I'm going to start talking about how this tek is at least one of those.  Well, what I'm actually going to do is ask, if many are willing to say fuck it and do the bucket, why stop the fuck it there?

This tek isn't unique.  It's probably not proper anything.  I'm posting it because it works with coir and because the monogamous relationship people have with their tried and true methods is about to get freaky deaky.

If you're adamant about being technical, this is closer to sterilization than pasteurization.

:nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan::nyan:

You'll need:

-650g brick of coir (or 650 grams of dry coir in any shape you can imagine, be creative)
-Oven bags (mine appear to be for baking turkeys)
-Vermiculite (~2 quarts)
-Gypsum (optional)
-You know, normal stuff?  A stove and oven, pot to boil water?  Maybe some towels or rags.
-Fuck the list format, let's get to the point, clock's a tickin.

Do the thing:

Here's some options for you, do it however you want:

0.(optional) If you have a flathead screwdriver you can use it to wedge the brick into a few pieces which will help it hydrate more easily and evenly.  Just less work later on.

1.a If you have a 5gal bucket, put your oven bag in there like it's a trash liner, then drop your brick inside
1.b If you don't have a bucket, and you do have a big metal sink, you can put the brick in the oven bag and put that in the empty sink.
1.c Don't have a sink?  What is wrong with you?  Put the bag with the brick in it in the bathtub.  You have one of those right?

2. Dump in 2.5 quarts of verm, or however much you want, just try to stay between 1 and 4.  I always eyeball it.  You can always add more later, right out of the bag, if it seems too wet.

3.  Boil 4.5 quarts of water, add 1/4 cup of gypsum(either pellets or powder) to the water while it's boiling, give it a quick stir so there's nothing stuck to the bottom, and pour it all directly into the bag, onto the coir/verm preferably.  The bucket method has this the easiest, while the bathtub is probably the hardest(don't burn yourself).  The oven bags come with ties, you want to get most of the hot air out, twist it up, and tie up the bag while it's still hot.

4. Now that you have a tied up bag full of hot ass water and substrate, take some hand towels or gloves and try to mix the bag up a little bit.  The goal is just to eliminate those dry clumps of coir and get everything broken up and hydrated.  This isn't really necessary but I feel like it helps everything work a bit better if you do.  Release all the hot air and re-tie the bag before continuing.

5. Take a rack out of your oven if necessary, and lay the oven bag in there so that it's not touching any of the sides, just sitting on the rack in the middle.

6. Dial the oven to 200 and leave it for about 80 minutes.  Turn the oven off and let it do a bit of its cooling in there, (another hour is good) then take it out and let it cool out on the counter or floor or wherever until you can handle it comfortably.

7. Dispense it out of the bag as needed, if you have leftovers, just close up the bag and use them when needed, since coir stores so well you can keep it that way for at least a week or two without there being a need to re-treat the coir.  I generally put about 6 quarts of grain to each brick of coir.  You know how it goes, mix it up evenly, get it nice and flat.

Now you's dids it!

The bags can usually be reused at least 3-4 times before they start to feel a little stiff/weak.  The logic is that the coir is already hot from the boiling water, so the problem of the core temperature taking too long to reach in the oven becomes a non-issue when the substrate is already in range of the target temperature prior to treatment, and with it having been placed in an environment hotter than the target temperature, the possibility of insufficient heat treatment is not a concern.  If anything over than CVG(Coir, Verm, Gypsum) is used for this it'll fail, but I find that it suits my needs perfectly and leaves no room for error.

:oldman::oldman: :oldman::oldman: :oldman::oldman: :oldman::oldman: :oldman::oldman: :oldman::oldman:

Now, as you can see based on the reception here on the first page the fact that I had to recreate this thread, it may be necessary to include some disclaimers so as to prevent further... outbursts.  I've already told you not to use this tek for anything but CVG, less than 3 sentences ago in fact, but I want to be real specific.  If you use this with manure, straw, coffee, or pretty much anything else, it's going to trich the fuck out.  Coir doesn't give a shit what you do to it, which is why I'm breaking conventions by using the oven in the first place.  It likes being cooked.  So I just cook it.  Like it's food.  Zing.

Have a nice day everybody.  Be friends!

I'll have this updated with pictures by the next time that I actually do a batch, until then, just imagine real hard.

  It's just another one of those things to get people thinking outside their conventions, with enough context that a noob can follow it too.  Not much else to write up currently.
I figured somebody would eventually benefit.  It'll probably come up if you search "coir tek" at least.

I've had some coir sitting in a bucket in my room since April. I should try using it without re-treating it and see what happens. I bet it would work just fine.

Sorry inoc. TEK is cool. I would consider oven coir consideration given to the fact that coir just works. If you can dial in h2o and get it from brick to expanded you're golden. The more black your coir ends up from heat the better but you can use coir straight off the brick

This must be what they were talking about in a noob thread about the shit that goes on in Cultivation. Krist on a krutch. Nobody cares about personal shit.

Inoc, no gypsum? (Isn't that the "G" in CVG?)

Good write up. Well conceived.

You don't have to add gypsum, I only use it occasionally in the grain step.

If you really want to just eyeball like a handful per brick.

Inoc, no gypsum? (Isn't that the "G" in CVG?)

Good write up. Well conceived.

:super:

I do use gypsum.  About 1/4 cup.  I guess I can add it, I knew somebody would bring it up eventually.  I just didn't want to have to include a paragraph about "what if it's pelleted?" and all that shit.  But, nah you're right, hang on, I'll chop that in there.

Also.. everybody else... I don't know what to say, other than..  What is WRONG with you?  I don't have any problems with any of you or your ways of doing things, so just chill out about it in here.  I'm sure you can find a thread to shit down each others necks in that'll let you go all out.  On one hand, thanks for the free bumps.  On the other hand, I'm disappointed that page one of this tek is now forever branded with a bunch of shit talking, and there's nothing I can do about it.  I haven't even gotten the chance to throw in some pictures.

I dunno I guess I expected a shitstorm with it including an oven, but I expected the shitstorm to be directed at me, which I would then field accordingly, but I wasn't expecting it to just break out like wildfire while I was asleep.

I'll add a disclaimer or whatever.  I left it out because I was actually interested to see the reception of using an oven for coir.  I see that it might be necessary now.

edit: there was already a disclaimer about this only working with coir, so, I must regretfully call out whoever suggested that as doing so as a sneaky way of antagonizing someone else, most likely.  I elaborated on it in the OP anyway.

If you do everything else correctly, 100%, but this isn't the hard part of anything.  Success depends 1000x more on your spawn and your conditions.  There isn't much you can do during this stage, with coir, that would be a deal-breaker.

From what I'm seeing coir is something very contam resistant, does this drastically reduce yields, leaving the poo out?

About 5-6 quart jars of grain to a 650g brick of coir will turn up anywhere from 6-12 ounces as a general estimate.  I don't know how much better poo does but using coir doesn't feel like settling to me.

Albino A+, Penis Envy, and Albino Penis envy are the favorites so far.  The first because it's just an all around good variety, and the other two because they're ridiculously potent and weird looking.  Got some new stuff going on recently though and plan on trying some strain crossing soon, so, no telling what's on the horizon.

That's all up to you really.  I don't really follow anything in particular right now, other than any teks I write up, which are things I typically do.  Even then, nothing is all in one place anywhere on the site.  3 grain masters to 7-10 receiver jars per master isn't a bad way to start a round of grows.

Hey Johnny.  I'm assuming you're referring to my coffee grain dunk I did this morning.

I have 8 6 qt shoebox tubs colonizing and three more fruiting.  So yeah, I'm experimenting with some things that quite possibly will contam.

If it works out and if I can get consistent results I'll make a tek.  But I wouldn't follow in my footsteps unless you're prepared to lose some tubs.

Yeah, I deleted and restarted that thread as just a way to link to some things I want to try out.  You can follow and post thoughts about the coffee experiment here

I don't want to shit up Inocuole's thread but I will say I'm not terribly optimistic about it; just wanted to see for myself since I couldn't find any concrete experiments.

Yeah, I saw.  Was sorry to see it.

Thanks for sharing your ideas though. It's stuff like this that gets me thinking of new ways to approach things.

I think you did the impossibly easy oat tek too which got me into trying (and loving) oats.

On that note, here's some overdue :mushroom2: for ya

When I first started I used the easiest sounding, most "foolproof" teks I could on the internet.  I lost everything to trich :lmafo:

Then I followed Frank's teks to a T.  Which was good practice.  Eventually even Frank said fuck it and started using the bucket tek for coir and after doing some research I do too because it's just less hassle.  Inocuole's tek is a similar concept.  As he said it's not 'proper' anything but for coir it's certainly good enough.

If you want to experience pasteurization so you have a good idea how to do it coir is good practice.  If you overcook it, under cook it, whatever it'll be fine.

On that note coir will never actually tell you if you pasteurized correctly or not.  Still won't be sure that you've mastered it until you put some poo through it.  Regardless, that's how I learned to pasteurize.  I did it about 2-3 times before I said fuck it and started just doing this.  This probably cooks the coir a bit more than the bucket tek obviously, but the mushrooms seem to like it that way for digestion.

You'll be fine.  Biggest thing is to check your coir while you're breaking it up or spawning to it, make sure there's no bullshit in there like raw grains or piece of corn.  It's rare but it can happen and when it does it can plant a seed of failure in your grow.  Granted usually you can still pull a first flush when that happens.

Yeah, I'm sure I 'fucked' up my first coir pasteurization.  But it gave me a bit of an idea when I started fucking around with jiffy (which was just last week!)

Yeah, if your spawn is clean and you don't add anything crazy to your coir (just verm and gypsum if you want) I think you'll find that coir is really forgiving.

I know it isn't coir, but I have frozen excess 50/50 manure straw with some gypsum/verm. 5 months later the poop performed flawlessly
