When inoculating jars do I stick the syringe through the masking tape covering the holes in the lid?
    #22060857 - 08/07/15 10:24 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Question in topic. Just wondering if I go right through the tape covering the gas exchange holes/ inoculating holes.

Also, when leaving the jars to inoculate do I remove the tape completely from the lids?

im guessing he's talking about BRF cakes and some teks call for tape over the inoc holes to keep water out as well as the foil.

if thats the case take the tape and foil off right after sterilization and keep them off

Id say f the tape overall, and just leave the foil on, just take it off for a couple of second for inoc and put it on again.

OP, there is no need for tape or foil to be on your jar lids post-inoculation. If you have a verm barrier, which you should, then it will protect your brf cake from any airborne contams.

Here we go again with the assumptions, just saying before this gets out of hand: OP hasnt said shit about his tek nor setup. Since Im feeling virtuous Id advice to not give advice reassuming earlier assumptions by others. Leaving the foil on is the oldest "trick" in the book and I still do it like 30% of the time to this day. Its the easiest way ever to dodge contams while incubating, next to having breathing tape/filter. Seeing as OP is already unsure about poking the tape or not, if he has the right kind of tape, and were pretty much walking in the dark as to how hes storing them, or what "them" even are. Keeping the foil on is a pretty sure way to not risk anything. Maybe Im just lucky with my SAB+enviroment, but Ive gotten one contam ever doing it this way. Ever. And even that one im 99% sure it was contaminated mycelium at inoc.

Wow....just wow....

Leaving the foil on does nothing except aid in moistening the filter material.

It certainly does not filter anything......make a BRF cake without a dry verm layer and just use foil, and watch it contam.

That is, if you would like to be proved wrong.

The foil is there to stop water from dripping into your inoculation holes and/or ruining your filter during, and only during the sterilization process.

Moist filter = bad filter.

The foil gets removed after sterilization and should stay off.

And using "filter tape" does nothing, there is already a dry verm layer that works just fine.

If anything it's there to make you feel better.

Sorry for the lack of information about my setup. Total noob here.

So, yes, I'm doing the BRF method in a shotgun fruiting chamber. No lights in the chamber, just going to leave by a window. (I'm in Louisiana. It's pretty warm in the room I'm going to be using to fruit).

I thought to put tape over the holes because of this video (go to about 5:40)

I'm still unsure if I should have tape over the holes or not...
