I bought my jars online. I am building a glove box to spec. I will sterilize my box. My question is how do i move my jars into the box? Aftr i inject the jars will i need to put microspore tape over each hole.. i ask because my jars have already been sterilized. I have not opened the packaging they are in. I need clarification thanks

Yo. Come see us over in Mush Cult. We never recommend presterilized media because you have no idea how long it has been sitting or how it was prepared. While taping over the holes after inoculation is not absolutely necessary due to the verm barrier(I am assuming they are PF style jars), it is recommended to help ensure success. Build yourself a still air box and inoculate in there. Tape over the holes and just move them to a shelf afterward. Do not incubate.
The vermiculite barrier was definitely disturbed due to being shipped. I do not know how they are packaged, but make sure they are upright and the vermiculite is not piled all on one side from being tossed around in transit. Move them into the box quickly and make sure your other sterile proceedures are sound.

This is my first attempt. I will try to make my own substrate next time. I know this is the most cricial part of the process. Still aur box is the samething as a glove box?

They are not that delicate. Relax. I do my own pressure cooking but I still inoc in open air. Never once had a contam following the flame sterilize tech.

Oh, this wasn't a thread on assisting a Shroomerite in committing suicide? Wrong forum, I guess...

You will be hard pressed to be the worst poster in this forum, but have certainly taken the cake in OTD.

Dito. The glove box is more about keeping air from kicking stuff up. You don't need a class 10 sterile environment or whatever in there. Just make sure you sterilize your needle after every injection (at least after every jar).
Usually I inoc in open air, then take a square of foil (sterile from my oven), cover, and leave to colonize a few days prior to removing. Like the above poster mentions, if the verm layer on top of the jar still looks good (plenty of dry verm) then the foil is overkill.
Your jars need air to colonize faster, but I usually wait to introduce fae after I start seeing mycellium to ensure there's an "immune system" to repel foreign stuff.
Either way, I hope you have a lot of fun and see some success. It's a very cheap and rewarding hobby! ^recognition

Not after every jar. After EVERY injection. We recommend the SAB for new commers because it is their best chance to ensure success.

Your oven sterilizes nothing. The tinfoil is completely useless and not recommended.

Jars don't need FAE. They get GE through the holes for inoculation.
Can a mod please move this to mushcult before OP gets more advice like the poster above?

Lol, nice Rogers, I am just trying to help, man. Thanks for trying to bring better info to OP, even if you gotta blatantly trash me to do it
Id argue with you about the foil, but that's not on topic and you opened from a venomous place... Eager to see how others feel about how to store inoculated jars if the verm layer is not intact.

Only thing I ragged on you for was your bullshit in OTD, but you are right, I shouldn't have brought that into this thread. To be fair, you came in here talking about slitting your wrists, I am just trying to help the guy reach his goal.

All good man, I should come to expect my messing around in there will affect my dynamics everywhere else. I can assure you that I'm nowhere near like I portray myself in there. It'd be truly be exhausting. ANYWAY! Thank you for the corrections.
I don't want to jack OPs thread, but now I have questions... So you believe putting 3" x 3" squares in the oven at 500 degrees would not sterilize them? Why?
What is the difference between fae and ge? fuggit, Ill search that one.

GE is the exchange of gases across a membrane only, it is not an air current. FAE is more along the lines of what is happening in a SGFC where subtle currents literally move whole pockets of air. FAE helps water to evaporate off the substrate during fruiting to trigger pin formation.
Sterilization is a term that gets thrown around too much in my opinion. Even a pressure cooker does not sterilize. It dramatically reduces the live contaminants and eliminates most of the spores yet to germinate. Endospores can survive the process and that is why we try and colonize jars as quickly as possible. It is a race. Yes, you can and should leave a jar from every batch as a control to see if it contams on its own, but still after a certain point it will grow something.
Your oven may sanitize, but it does not sterilize. Either way it is irrelevant since the added tinfoil is not necessary.

Thank you for the information, man, I certainly have a lot to learn here, especially with vocabulary! I'm definitely going to change my methods and look forward to seeing your posts again in the future (unless it's in OTD where all bets are off) :P
