Popcorn spawn. Very slow colonization, after 15 days?

UPDATE:
- Thanks a lot to all of you who took the time to read my ramblings;
- Got most thoughtful replies from Lowtech, Roker and Bryanbzl, stating that I must promote air exchange (instead of gaving a closed lid) and that the local temperature (around 90F) should be too high, causing the internal temp. to be unbearable to the mycelium;
- Just in case, updating with pictures that should be inside the post, for they were inside a PDF file that had to be downloaded (my bad, my apologies).

Greetings to all

If I can, please, count on your kindness and vast expertise, I would like to understand whether I have a very slow colonization of popcorn spawn. I am a complete newbie, so please pardon me for the rough edges :smile:

In short, this is what I did:
- could not get my hands on organic rye, bought popcorn at the supermarket;
- did the popcorn tek (soaked for 24 hs, simmered for 60 min., drained on colander, dried on towel, PCd, cooled, transfered 2 agar wedges of Pleurotus Ostreatus around 1/2 x 1/2 inches);
- with local humidity 43%, temperature 88º F, imersed the jar in water, almost up to the top, since day 1;
- since I have no access to tyvek, the jar has a closed lid (no filter, no air exchange).

After about 15 days, the jar doesn't have even 1/3 with mycelium, per attached pics.

Any thoughts are highly appreciated.

Best regards, and thanks to all for your time.

Be forewarned that I have no experience with popcorn, or much experience at all for that matter. Having said that; I do allot of reading and research on the forums, and I would say that you really need to have some type of gas exchange for proper colonization of the popcorn. You don't need Tyvek. You can put a hole in the lid and stuff it with polyfill, or cover the hole with micropore tape. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in soon!

No gas exchange = no growth. See how long you can last without breathing to get a better understanding of your slow growth problem. Oysters are super fast growing in optimum conditions. As long as you don't shake them up, you might be ok if you get some micropore tape and crack the lids a bit and tape them over so you get some gas exchange.

Lowtek and Roker, thanks a lot, your thoughtful input is very much appreciated.

I was hoping that during vegetative growth abundance of CO2 and lack of O would be OK, but I must assume I was wrong for the facts speak louder :smile: after all, and will do as sugested by you both.

Very best regards

88F plus the warmth from colonization puts you at roughly 98F... seems a little hot.

Incubate jars around 70-75 it has been a common myth for a long time that incubation should be at 85F. At 70F ambient I have measured my jars at 85F internal. So you can imagine what 88F will get you. Ditto on the GE as well. unless your jars are 2/3s full, you will not get away with no GE filter.

Bryanbzl, thanks a lot, I appreciate the time you took to help me out.

I hadn't thought about the jar's internal temp.

Now, checking Stamets' TMC parameters for P O., it says "thermal death occurs if mycelium is held above 104°F. for 48 hours"...

Pretty close to what you mentioned! --> "At 70F ambient I have measured my jars at 85F internal. So you can imagine what 88F will get you"

I thought that I could get away with our local humidity of around 40% and temps around 90F, imersing the jar in water, but that didn't seem to do the trick.

One things that puzzles me is that although the mycelium that was strong over the agar wedges is no longer there, I was wondering whether the remaining mycelium was still viable, for I am not able to tell the diference, being that all my attempts at growing mycelium so far didn't end weel -- that is except mycelium over half of a raw potato, that in a very short time was all over it, till the day the potato itself was no longer good :smile:

Now that I promoted air exchange per Lowtech and Roker's suggestions, will add some ice cubes to the water based on your input, and see where that takes me.

Very best regards
