I think its actually more likely that we will fix our planet and learn to live somewhat harmoniously and sustainably in the eventual future. And at this point that seems pretty unlikely or far off. If we ever do reach other solar systems or inhabit planets outside of this system, I think it will be after we figure our shit out on earth, and cut down on population.

I think the living harmonious/sustainable talk is a very low probability. I want you to be right so bad but I just don't see it happening.
Either way, man must explore. You can make the argument that it's for survival of the human race or you could just say there are really really smart guys with deep pocket books who are treating this as a hobby at the moment...Musk, Branson and whomever is behind the Mars One Project.
Exciting times we are in right now if you ask me! All things outer space are great to discuss and think about and it really blows your mind sometimes

This is the Mars One Project. I think their timetable is a little aggressive, but the plan is well underway. As it states on their website, no new undiscovered technology needs to be realized to make this possible - we have the tools now.

I had to look it up to see if there was any truth to that and I don't see jack shit. Yeah maybe they're selling them, but you don't really believe thats what they are relying on to pay for this?
What is the Mars One Business Model
Establishing the first human settlement on Mars is the defining moment of the 21st century and the most exciting event in our lifetime. Mars One's revenue model is based on the media value of that adventure, intellectual property rights, several other business cases, investments, and donations.
Mars One receives donations from over 100 countries every month. At this moment, the revenue generated from donations is not enough to finance the mission but with every step Mars One takes and with every contract that is closed, more people donate and the average amount goes up. We expect that revenues from donations can contribute substantially to our mission by the time our first unmanned mission lands on Mars.
The mission to Mars will primarily be financed through investments. In March 2013, Mars One closed a very successful investment round and is currently in the closing stages of a much larger investment round. The next step for Mars One will be a listing on a stock exchange to enable supporters to 'own' part of the mission to Mars. Investors are investing in Mars One because they believe in a return on their investment. That return on investment will come from several revenues streams:"

I hope it is what they are relying on. It is an idiot mission. If they get there how are they gonna get back? They will needs a shit ton of fuel to escape even Mars' gravity. They might as well bring caskets with them because anybody who goes is gonna die there. It's a waste anyway.

I believe everyone signing up for it knows it's a one way mission and that they will all die on Mars. If I had the brainpower for it and thought I had a legitimate chance of being chosen as part of the first settlers, I would sign the dotted line with zero hesitation.
I tend to agree with you that it seems like a somewhat pointless exercise (given what we know/dont know now), however, that doesn't mean we shouldn't explore it.

Hey I just noticed your sig with the federal deficit. Is that a big reason why you're against mars colony, space exploration, etc? Hasn't a lot of this been turned over to the private sector and NASA is now receiving much less from the federal government?

the question is, "should we terraform mars asap" once we begin there is no turning back.
we just discovered liquid water on mars but cant get anywhere near it for fear of contamination when we begin sending life to mars we will lose the ability to study mars as a separate planet uninhibited by earth

I think that what will assure a stronger push into (local) space is going to be the lure of profit. There could be untold riches in the asteroid belt. 24-hour fee energy offers potential benefit, maybe for savings on some energy intensive process, or a fleet of solar satellites one could beam it down to a microwave farm for sale on Earth. Space tourism may be niche but the will be more and more interest if it were to become even remotely affordable.
As people are needed to support whatever nascent space industries evolve, support resources like bases and habitats will needed. I tend to imagine slow but steady growth of private space operations, and as the ball gets rolling it can go faster and faster.
Our biggest problem right now is the cost of lifting anything into orbit, but that is going to improve. I like one design that uses a few miles of electromagnetic launch rails to gain 600 MPH (950 KM/H) at liftoff.
Barring a global catastrophe of some sort, I think we will probably be established throughout the solar system in a few hundred years. Unfortunately, we'll also be trapped in the solar system - probably for millennia, maybe forever (excluding many-generation ships) if we never find a way to exceed the speed of light. I see little reason to expect that we will either, at least not in any manner suitable for transport at any scale beyond the atomic. I hope I am wrong about that though.

Years ago there was a parcel of land that couldn't be used commercially because of something having to do with the trees on the land. The owner wanted to build - the city said not while the trees were there.
What to do? What to do?
Then, one night, someone went in with a chainsaw and cut every single tree halfway through on the entire property. A very unsafe condition which needed the trees to be immediately removed.
No one found out who cut the trees. But the land owner was able to have a nice shiny Walgreens built for everyone in town to enjoy.
.....
Once someone goes to Mars and "contaminates" the area, it's a lot easier to finally build a Walgreens there.
