do you think we are going to leave earth?
    #22054202 - 08/06/15 03:44 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

http://futurism.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/exoplanets.png

so i was looking at this photo today, and reading how far these planets are away from us... one being only 20 light-years away.

i started thinking about how far we've come as a civilization and what are missions have been regarding space.

we launched metal into space, to see if it was possible.
then we launched animals, to see if it was survivable.
then we sent people to the moon, to push our boundaries
all while pushing the limits of space craft. (see voyager missions)

we put a giant space station into orbit. to see if we could last for long periods of time in 0 gravity and the most inhospitable environment known to life, space.

now we are about to put people on mars, to see if we can build colonies and terraform other planets
(DARPA wants to use genetically modified organisms to terraform mars)

The way i see it, we are going to be inhabiting multiple planets in distant future. thoughts?

I think we have the capability and will make it to other planets within our solar system, but IMO we will die out or kill ourselves long before we create anything capable of sending us to another star system.

I think if we stopped competing on a global level then there would be more progress. Until then it's going to take a long ass time, maybe not even happen looking at current world politics and the economy. Until a respectable solution to monetization happens, we're not going anywhere fast.

The sad part is the competing was the only thing pushing us forward, the only reason we went to the moon was because of the cold war and Russia sending sputnik into space and us having fear they were going to gain the higher ground, so we booked ass and tried to get the higher ground first, then gave up trying to send people further in space because the conflict stopped.

we might be able to travel to nearby planets
but I don't think we can do other solar systems in our biological bodies
not until we can merge with machines will we be able to travel light years

traveling light years won't be an issue. in order to combat the problem with degrading bodies and long space travel, we will have to build colonies in space and other planets first. that way, we can travel to new planets and raise generation after generation to continue living till we get to a planet. it will take a loooong time. but i don't think it's entirely impossible**.

Then comes in the factor, of what if we send something fast and large enough that it can make it to another star system within even 2000 years, which compared to todays technology is unbelievably fast even for the closest star, then we'd have to factor in the possibility of what if within that 2000 years we come up with even BETTER technology and can make it there faster, and bypass the people already on their way.

Plus the variables of dead cold rogue planets that can't be seen in infrared, and comets and meteors blasting the craft that's traveling on it's way that we wouldn't be able to even see or avoid because they'd be cold and too dim of light in interstellar space, even the tiniest grains of sand that weren't refined like the sand on our atmosphere that would be nonstop pelting the spacecraft traveling forward and ever so slowly wearing down the outside of it (this is a problem even on mars, the dirt and dust on mars isn't smooth like it is on Earth because the lack of an atmosphere means less friction for it to smooth out like it did here, so wind and any dust on mars is jagged and ridged and would be constantly tearing at any spacesuits that were continuously worn on the surface)

We're still in the very early stages of technological advancement, so it would be ignorant for me to say we're incapable of it because 200 years ago people would say we're incapable of pulling things out of our pockets and talking to someone across the globe but it still seems like it will be too long a time and we are too prone to war to advance to the degree needed for interstellar travel, and I only named small and few variables and there is hundreds more.

The amount of energy and power you would even need to travel such distances, you would basically have to evolve beyond war because anything that can harness energy like that, would be very capable of wiping itself out, especially if one part of the species wanted to use that type of power to try and wipe out another part of the species. Nukes don't even compare to the type of energy and power needed to traverse such distances.

This guy is always enjoyable to watch and since he is an astrophysicist he can explain it in terms much better then me.

But if you have 8 minutes, he kind of explains traveling through space and puts in perspective the true distances between each and why it would be so hard even to the closest star which is only 4 light years away (which has a earth like planet around it)

Not in our life time, at least not legitimate extraterrestrial habitability.
In 100 years? Anything is possible.

I think it will happen eventually, but considering how far down the line the prospect lays it is impossible to guess how it may unfold.

In fifty years we will easily have conquered death. It may be within some of our life times. Wedont know if we are building toward a collective unseen goal, but I choose to acknowledge we may. Time may not be liniar, we may be falling toward something spectacular. Choosing to live in cynasism will poison you and those around you. There is pleanty of poison to go around.

How do you figure we will beat death in fifty years? I am curious. Are we talking Ghost in the Shell prosthetic bodies? I too think that great things are in the works and technology seems to increase exponentially especially in the past couple hundred years. Once we make our way into the AI Rrevolution anything can happen.

i think its possible.

it all comes down to whether or not humanity destroys itself.

i dont think anyone can confidently say wher or not it will happen

Most likely through reparative therapy and secret Elf knowledge of Sam Harris.

we have no choice to but to leave if the human race is to go on!

our sun wont last forever and will swell and engulf the earth or the other scenario is the andromeda galaxy is on a collision course with the mikyway galaxy (us) and when we collide everything will be destroyed here on earth.

our only hope is too find a way before the clock runs out.

it is our main goal as humans that we are all working towards without even knowing it!!

as we evolve our idea and they grow the future brings new technology and this will be the key to our survival

our survival is based on our desire to learn and willingness to be educated
