First grow - WBS - Horse Poo, Mini-Mono
    #22053537 - 08/06/15 01:10 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So much reading, and finally a post!

This is my first go at this, and I’ve really enjoyed the process so far. I spend a bit of time away from home so I know this isn’t ideal, but I have a helper at home who has been monitoring and sending me photos.

4 different strains, into 23 quart jars. 6/6/6/5

5 June – WBS put to soak

6 June – Simmered and drained. Loaded into jars and PC’d at 15psi for 90min.

7 June - Inoculated via MS syringes, 1cc per jar. 100qt tub as SAB. I used a couple of different lids, some were 1/4" hole with polyfill, some had that plus a paint coverall disk on top. Others were 5/16" holes with polyfill. At the end of the day, I didn't notice any that performed any better than any other.

12 June – First jar lost to Trich.

13 June – Seeing small growth in 6 jars

21 June – Small growth in more jars. One jar almost fully colonised, shaken.

28 June – More jars shaken. First jar now showing purple sections. Thrown out. So far have lost 4 jars to contam.

Didn’t keep close track of what happened between then and spawn o’clock, but at the end of the process I had 4 jars that never showed any growth, 11 jars that colonised nicely, and 8 jars contam.

Ended up having 3 qts of spawn from 2 strains, 4 qts from 1 and 1 qt from 1.

Room was around 75-80 most of the time and got light throughout the day but never direct sunlight on the jars

I let the colonised jars consolidate for 2 weeks or so as I was away. Some were put in the fridge but started to pump out some metabolites so we put them back at room temperature.

I used Frank’s hpoo substrate and pasteurisation teks to prep some manure/coir/gypsum to spawn into some Sterilite 26L totes for mini-mono’s.

3 quarts of substrate to 3 quarts of spawn (well, almost 3 of spawn. None of them were really full). I also dunked the grains in their jars for 30 min.

I’ve used pasty’s mini mono tek to prep my tubs. I have one 1 ¼ hole on each long side currently taped, as well as five ¼ inch holes at the top on the short side, also taped. I used white garbage bags to line the tubs.

30 July – Tubs spawned to bulk. Left in the top corner of a room that gets sunlight through the day, but not direct sunlight on the tubs. Temperature has been reasonably steady at 70-75.

31 July – Tubs already showing lots of white on surface.

1 August – More white!

2 August – Almost totally covered in white. Small sections of substrate still showing.

5 August – All 3 tubs completely covered. Lots of big fluffy mounds. There’s a lot of condensation on the lid and sides, as well as water on the bottom of the tubs outside the liner.

Question - I can see through the liner a little and it looks like the sub isn’t full colonised yet, but the top seems to be. Wondering if it’s time to stuff some polyfill and put them next to a sunlit window?

EDIT: Not sure why pictures are saying they've been deleted, I just uploaded them through the shroomery link.  Imgur to the rescue!

I can't tell because the pictures still aren't "zoom in. Enhance. " able right now. Looks like you did your homework! Looking good from what I can tell- keep us updating and happy cultivating!

i cant zoom in on your pics. did you delete them or is the website actin up?

and if you can see through the liner that everything is not fully colonized just wait a bit longer. they will fruit when they're ready either way so its best just to give them prime conditions for the stage they are in

Wow looks awesome! Yeah I'd wait a few more days- saw a couple spots that were still being colonized. Looks wonderful though! I bet you get a killer pinset!

I've also done two mini mini monos, with the single jars left over. 1qt spawn to 1 qt sub, just a couple of 6L shoebox ones. Going to see what happens!
I was going to g2g them into a bunch more jars but just didn't get the chance. I want to try agar next, just because I had such mixed results with the syringes, would be nice to try and isolate them and make sure that the spores are clean.

I have to go away for a few weeks so my wonderful helper will be getting to have all the fun watching these babies fruit while I'm gone.

Is there any way to stall or delay the fruiting without compromising the flush? I've had a look through the search function but couldn't really find anything..

apart from cold temps like a fridge not really.

i suppose you could not induced fruiting parameters and let it consolidate a few days to buy some time i guess

First pins! Only in one tub. Bottom holes are now stuffed with polyfill and top holes are untaped. These little guys grew this much overnight! So excited!

Good job on the grow man, but I would try to dial in those top holes lightly with polyfill to allow FAE, but not soo much that it dries out the surface, especially since you didn't case it.

Ended up re-taping a couple of the holes at the top, to reduce FAE. Plenty of moisture still inside.
Other 2 tubs have been put into fruiting, not showing anything yet.

You need FAE throughout the entire fruiting process, stuff those holes with polyfill ASAP!!

Not all the holes. There is still FAE and I have good dry circle around the holes. I have 5x 1/4" holes staggered at the top on each short side as per Pasty's mini mono write-up. Right now 2 of them are uncovered, the other 3 are covered. In the thread, he doesn't have his holes stuffed with polyfill so I was just trying to follow it as close as possible.

Wondering if maybe I should put some in there based on the advice I'm getting in this thread?

no, if you follow pastys advice just keep at it!
polyfill is used to regulate air flow in larger holes.
your setup with several smaller holes is adjusted by taping up some holes.

I do however think only two 1/4" holes on each side wont be enough. is there any reason you taped them?
look at the substrate surface and see how long it takes to dry up, dialed in = it doesnt dry up
but you can also dial in for more FAE and just mist as needed.

got any pics?

Photo of the dry ring around the 5 hole setup on the tub that is producing. Is this enough? Should I bore out those holes a bit? Add more holes? Lightly polyfill?

Also some photos of the three tubs. 2 of them I just removed the tape from all holes, so they're definitely a bit moist right now.

How does the sub look on the one that's actually producing? Not sure if the photos are good enough to really tell.

I'm unsure how the first flush will turn out on that one. It seems very uneven compared to some other posts on this forum. I understand this is part of the crapshoot that is MS syringes, but so be it. I will be trying to get some prints from these and maybe give agar a shot for the next one.

Thanks for all the quick replies and help, it's really nice to see how much everyone cares!

MS is a crapshoot for sure, I'm experiencing it first hand with the mono I have in the works. The pin set is extremely uneven, even tho I cased it!! I would definitely recommend taking clones/prints and working with agar for your next grows, as I'll be doing the same. However, you should be getting a decent pin set in those tubs, as your surface looks rather healthy, keep the thread updated on your progress! :awesomenod:

Update o'clock.

One tub still just doing it's staggered fruiting thing.
Two other tubs still just hanging out, thinking about fruiting. Looks like lots of knots, good dry circles around holes. But no pins yet. They're getting natural sunlight throughout the day, not direct sunlight though. Temp is around 75 in the room.

And a painful moment, one of my mini mini's got itself a case of the greens this morning :frown: I only got one jar out of the 6 I inoculated from this syringe. Lost all others to contams. Methinks there's a pattern. Going to try the syringe on some agar eventually and see what's going on.

Take a fresh print from those and use those spores since those last jars you said got contamination

I had 4 different "strains" for my 4 syringes. 3 of them have done reasonably ok. 1 of the strains has had zero success, that's the one in the contam'd tub. I inoculated 6 jars with that syringe, got 1 jar that didn't contam, but now that jar has become this contaminated tub. Kind of disappointing, but I'm looking forward to putting it on agar and seeing if I can pull something from it.

My other two tubs are still not producing anything. I've drilled a couple more 1/4" holes up top to try and get some better FAE, as the sub is still quite moist, as well as giving it a bit of a fan to convince these little guys that the air is nice up here.

The fruiting tub is sending up more pins by the day. Had one little guy that wanted to abort, but he's been removed to make sure there's no peer pressure. I do seem to be getting a lot of pins around the outside/side pins.

I know it's nowhere near as impressive as some of the guys on here, but it's got me pretty excited!!!

3 veils broke last night, and they've been picked. Grabbing a scale today so standby for wet weights!

We added two more holes under the existing five yesterday morning. Nice dry rings now, and still plenty of moisture in the tub.

Tub in it's current state

Wondering about this little guy, he doesn't look as healthy as the ones on the other side of the tub. Any ideas as to what might be going on? It almost looks a bit dry, but as you can see there's plenty of moisture over there?
