Kratom cutting specs.
    #22053130 - 08/06/15 11:42 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I recently received a kratom cutting from a very generous friend. I planted it in a smaller pot than I originally wanted to because I had run out of the larger ones at that time and I figured I would let it grow a lil and replant it once I seen it start to grow. It's in a self watering pot and has been planted in there for about 2 weeks or more but I've seen no new growth on it what so ever.

I haven't found much information on caring for kratom cuttings and using the search function hasn't led me to the exact answers I was looking for so I thought I'd ask you guys.

How often does kratom like to be watered and is it ok to grow it in full sun? I know it likes LOTS of ferts but what NPK would be best for such a young cutting?

It loves water and it CAN grow in full sun. Use a balanced fertilizer. If you drink coffee throw some spent grounds on top. They seem to love that stuff.

:whathesaid::whathesaid::whathesaid:

I grow mine in full sun and they do fine. I water pretty frequently, they drink up a ton of water. The one I put in the ground doesn't need watering nearly as much as my potted ones (obviously). I water potted ones pretty much every day. They need it when they start filling out their pots. They'll suck up all the water in a day easy.

They really do appreciate being transplanted into large enough pots, as can be expected with a tree. They'll grow really nice for a while then slow down as they fill out their pots.

Quite honestly, they aren't hard to grow at all. Maybe when they are really young, but once you have em going, I don't see how you can kill it....

I had mine in full sun but I don't think I adapted it enough so I moved it into the shade with my psychotria and it has since shot out 2 new branches.

Wen I first got it it was pretty dormant for awhile then eventually started picking up its pace nicely.

Anyone know much about taking kratom cuttings? Like how big they have to be?

There are some people here that report 90%+ success taking cuttings, but sadly, I have not perfected my technique. I have tried all sorts of ways from bubble cloner to straight water to straight to soil and all sorts of variations in between.

Currently I am trying straight to peat moss in pots in water tray using rooting hormone. The only time I have had success was bubble cloner to soil after roots formed, but that was a very low success rate.

I have also tried more than a couple different lengths for taking cuttings. The ones I had success with was 2 node cuttings. I have tried everything from 1 node, to 4-5 node.

When they shoot out roots, they will do so from internodal stem as well as the cut of the stem.

How big of cuttings were you taking? That is my main question, thanks for all the other useful info though too

Ah I was thinking in terms of length I will check the branches on mine closer and see how many nodes are present then maybe attempt two cuttings.

I took a few pics of mine today as I was transplanting it to a larger pot. I noticed the roots were spreading so I guess it was spending it's time spreading it's root instead of putting on leaves:grin:

In the 3rd image I was planning to plant it in that larger terra cotta pot but after hearing how much it liked water I planted it in an even larger plastic pot with a self watering thing on the bottom instead.

Oh, forgive me. The ones I had success with were about 4-5 inches or so from growth tip to cut spot. I've tried them as long as probably 10 inches or so and as short as about 2 inches. From what I hear from folks that have a lot of success with theirs, they simply say to do a 'couple nodes' or 'just fresh supple growth'...

I should let mine grow out then, the two newer branches are only like 2-3 inches and 2-3 nodes. I may clip one of the two main older branches though.

Yeah, When I fist got mine, the only thing I could think of was how I couldn't wait for the plant to grow so I could try some cuttings. Give it a few months of growth and you'll have more cuttings than you can shake a stick at.
