Cocaine package shipped to Telluride

August 4, 2015
A package containing what police said was “hundreds of grams” of cocaine was shipped to Telluride on July 24 by the United Parcel Service, but got turned around because the recipient no longer lived at the delivery address, which ultimately put the package into police hands and the sender into hot water.
A UPS van tried to deliver the package, which initially didn’t raise any eyebrows, but the man who answered the knock at his door said the addressee on the package no longer lived at the address. Per standard procedure, the package was brought back to the UPS office in Montrose, where postal workers became suspicious of it and called the Montrose Police Department.
The mystery package was opened in the presence of Montrose police officers, and a “light, powdery substance” was found inside, according to Montrose Police Department Commander Gene Lillard. The powder tested positive for cocaine.
“It was a substantial amount of cocaine,” Lillard said, “in the hundreds of grams.”
The package originated in California, and Lillard said that the cocaine is in the possession of the police and the case has been forwarded to the 7th Judicial District Drug Task Force, which has an active investigation into the matter.
“It’s just not a wise thing to do, to ship drugs through the mail,” he added.
Those involved in the shipment of the drugs could face both federal and state felony charges, including possession and distribution of a controlled substance.

They became suspicious of a box. So how does a box act suspicious? would it not make eye contact with the delivery driver?

It sounds like he would have actually not been busted, as they only became suspicious once they realized the person living there no longer did, and had to take the package back. That guy could have just accepted hundreds of grams of cocaine.

Maybe the guy living there ordered it while really stoned and put the address to his old house.

Sounds like the guy who said that person doesn't live here anymore WAS the guy who ordered it and he just got paranoid.

Only after accepting the cocaine to be raided shortly after by law enforcement who knowingly gave it to him, I'm sure it eventually would have got worked out, but if you tell a cop the hot package is yours whether it's your name on it or not your going to have to deal with the police...

Lol I was thinking the same thing.
Most packages that are undeliverable are sent to back to the return address.
Not analyzed as being suspicious.
That's why you don't ship through UPS or Fedex

I think CO is just a hot spot now for packages.
I know a couple people that were sending out weed and when they went to go mail it, Postal Inspectors detained them, brought them into a room and opened the package and asked them questions.
How they knew they were sending it, I don't know.
The other dude I know grabbed the box and booked it into the mountains when they tried to detain him lol.

maybe drug shippers should learn to use prepaid shipping labels.

Also, if you are going to ship drugs in the mail (use USPS First Class or overnight only), use a USPS address as your return address. Not a PO Box. Its just an address that makes sure it never gets back to you, and they never to spot it.

Fake return address, obvious fake names. Too much postage. I am too lazy to look for it but there an FAQ on mailing drugs. One of the first things on it is don't use UPS.

He didnt say they aren't. He said don't use one as a return address.

I agree. The recipient was probably paranoid and thought the delivery was a set up or something. But in the end he just ended up fucking up a sure thing.
