Phellinus sp. (perhaps igniarius)
    #22051364 - 08/06/15 12:55 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, I had these specimens under Fomitopsis pinicola but a doubt crept in and was wondering if the one on the right (bracket Fungus B) could be something else such as Phellinus. The one on the left should be Fomitopsis pinicola. I forgot to check the tree trunk species, but from the bark it looks to be a a pine tree.

So are both A and B Fomitopsis, or B might be something else?

Trunk with bracket fungi A (on left) and B on right

Bracket Fungus A (Fomitopsis pinicola)

Bracket Fungus B (Is it a young specimens of Fomitopsis pinicola or something else such as Phellinus?)

Another bracket fungus (different specimen) labelled  as Fomitopsis but also with great doubt due to its unusual shape. Wish a confirmation.

I'm not very good with polypores, and your guesses seem reasonable. One useful trick is that in all members of the genus Phellinus the context will turn black if you put KOH or NaOH on them (use about a 10% solution). The other genera don't do that, so that may help you separate them a bit better.

I think all of the above are Fomitopsis, there are several species in the Fomitopsis pinicola complex. Also remember that polypores can be very variable in their growth patterns. Depending on local microevironments.

This

Is the same species and strain as this.(Ganoderma)

Thanks for the mini-lecture, much appreciated. No KOH during my holiday in Suomi, but it should be all variable forms of Fomitopsis pinicola growing on pine trunks.
