They can, I have done it plenty of times. Its a common misconception, RR used to say it a lot and it sounds believable. Try it for yourself if you want. The easiest way is to get unsoaked grains and weigh them, now microwave them and keep checking the temp, I stir the grains with a metal probe thermometer. I was getting readings of over either 140, 145, or 150C, my thermometer cut out at that point as it was its limit. Now weigh and continue microwaving, now weigh again and you will see it continued to lose weight/moisture even though it was well past 100C. Most grains will be 10-14% natural moisture.
This is with unsoaked grains, if soaked they will explode more easily and cease to have this property. They have to be whole grains with coatings, like rye, wheat, barley or popcorn. They will all eventually start to pop just like popcorn. They are pretty much like mini pressure cookers.

Quote:
As the oil and the water around the kernel are heated, they turn the moisture in the kernel into a superheated pressurized steam. Under these conditions, the starch inside the kernel gelatinizes, softens, and becomes pliable. The pressure continues to increase until the breaking point of the hull is reached: a pressure of about 135 psi (930 kPa)[9] and a temperature of 180 °C (356 °F). The hull ruptures rapidly, causing a sudden drop in pressure inside the kernel and a corresponding rapid expansion of the steam, which expands the starch and proteins of the endosperm into airy foam.
This may sound irrelevant as we work with moist grains, but I have successfully grown on grains heated in this manner. They are getting well above 121C and sterilization can happen at much quicker times. I believe this is how I have gotten away with it. However it is dangerous and grains can burn.

This is not the first time I've seen this question asked on here.
It's not worth even trying due to the cleanup that would be involved. Save yourself a bunch of wasted effort and get a PC.

1. You will have a hell of a time keeping grain jars submerged in oil.
2. If any water escapes or the jar breaks in the hot oil it will create a volcano type scenario. The oil would bubble out of the pot violently and end up on your heat source. Thus, burning your house down and quite possibly causing sever burns if you are near it.
3. If, by some miracle you succeed, the clean up would be a nightmare.
This all sounds like more work and extremely dangerous. Please don't attempt it. If you are serious about cultivation just buy a pressure canner. It will last years and gets the job done properly and easily. If you decide you don't like cultivation you can use the canner for other things or sell it. Good canners hold their value.

Perhaps I wasn't clear - this idea was really just meant to be more novel than practical, and only possibly useful under a very specific set of circumstances.
