I have a miller and a lincoln, neither compare to me speedglas. #M makes a speedglas with a respirator and filter, it also helps to keep your head cool while you're welding

I actually start welding school in a month. Im wondering what to expect. its going to cost me around 7k, i know there must be cheaper alternatives but ill be certified up to 6g on all processes and will have a license for my state, blue print reading knowledge etc. around my area there is alot of companies fabricating machinery/pipes&oil and gas equipment/aerospace stuff, local sikorsky got bought out by lockheed martin so i have a feeling there will be alot of neat jobs in welding/machining/engineering. Ive met some people trying to intern in some of these companies from school.
Do you have to be good at drawing to be good at welding? I know practice makes perfect, but im terrible at art, but i enjoy taking apart things and fixing stuff, i guess ill become good if i do it for a living.

Just did my first weld today!
It was tricky to get that puddle going but finally got it down. It was definitely tricky, cant go too slow or too fast, and you got to be the right distance away from the surface you are welding from.
Lots to learn and practice. Its nice to have a grinder near me to "erase" my mistakes.
Its an art for sure. Skys the limit with what welding can do, it seems.
Mi-Go, you made a smart choice going to school. So many directions u can go with welding skills.

I just came back from an interview for the classes and even though the pay starting out isnt much (12.50-15hr) i still see it as a useful skill one can grow in and earn more through the years, eventually i wanna tig pipe but that shit is fucking difficult, id have to go back to school for it. Im taking an intensive 24 week, 6 hours a day mon-fri class, it doesnt cover pipe but it does cover all fundamental basics and shit and they give certs and all and its rough.. Any longtime welders here? Ive already seen a couple, would like to hear some thoughts, are you guys happy with your choice in going into welding? I know its hard, hot, and dangerous work, but it pays off in the end.

One of my friends is a top certified welder with the certificate. He's a General Contractor now but he's still got it. It is an extremely difficult skill but if you can get pipeline certified, or even better underwater certified, you can make serious bank

Yeah I know a few people who have those and swear by them. I just got a great deal on the miller . It was open box and used maybe once. 9400i for 250 . Ill take it. It is a bit on the heavier side though.
I have a few crets myself, working on getting lots more over the next 8 months. that and a AS degree in metal fabrication. Ive had enough of masonry for awhile. Working 60 hours and owner gets pissed if I claim over 45. after this season ill be able to just focus on school.
As far as underwater welding . FUCK THAT!
Its not like you spend a day down there no you spend weeks in a small metal tube underwater. Something goes wrong you are fucked. Hell to even come back up you have to spend 2 weeks decompressing. Apparently there is lots of fights in those tubes.

Have you improved?
I just got into it. Exhaust on the car. Accidently cut a hole in it removing bolts and replacing gaskets and had to weld the hole back up. It's really simple it seems. Think feel better than ever. Maybe I could add a second project sometime soon for kicks! Using a stick welder too
good thing read to wear a respirator so at least started using a light weight one...

Stick welding in AC is garbage. Only hobby machines are AC. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a DC inverter machine.

I like using Smith welding system. You can use it for a lot of stuff for relatively cheap. Just make sure you know what you are doing.
Gas welding is great for exhaust. It is a lot harder then stick but man it's a great way to learn how to read the puddle.
I've been welding for 3 years ( not hobby with hobby 5 ) . It just takes time. If I was getting a good DC rig I would get one that can also do tig. It's worth the extra money.
Wire feed flux with a shit brand will work but it fucking sucks. And I wouldn't use it on critical parts.

if someone were to get a wire feed it would be a good idea to get one that has a gas system or can add a gas bottle too, flux wire welding is shit with little penetration, using gas you have a lot better control

Oh yeah I forgot to add that. I've been on sites where the boss is to cheap for gas.
So instead spend "too much time" fucking 8 pass weld. .
I don't work with that jackasses any more .

I've got a Miller CST 280 hooked up in the garage. It is a little bit more than a hobby machine but it does everything I want it to. If I hadn't gotten a sweetheart deal on my machine the next best stick/Tig combo machine would probably be a Maxstar 150. I've seen those used a lot in food processing/pharmaceutical plants for Tig welding stainless. They seem to work pretty well.
None of the new circuit board inverter/generator type machines will ever beat the old copper wound Lincolns as far as arc control and puddle characteristics. With those old machines you have an almost infinite amount of control and consistency. You can make the puddle do almost anything you want. Fast freeze, wash up.... But I'm never going to do x-ray quality welds in my garage.
I've been working as a CWI for about 3 years and now my go to machine is an iPad, lol.

Well, sadly that train maintenence repair shop went out of business. I was super bummed. Basically right after i started, there was 2 weeks left and they closed shop.
I did not get a lot of experience, but it sure was nice.
Theres actually a store in my town that you can rent portable welder/generators. Once i get a nice full time stable job, im renting one for sure
