If you care about your lungs and overall health id suggest a respirator. Here they have to be provided by your employer but i am in canada.

I dont have much tips because for the most part i suck at welding. I just dont have the patience to put enough practice in. Some people have a nack for it and other people have to put in x amount of hours before they get good enough to pass

Its all about speed, inclination of your rod, and having your machine set properly.

Have you had any formal training at all? Do they not require welding tickets from the i believe asme does it if your stateside. Could be mistaken. Here we have the canadian welding bureau

My brains a little flustered as i just went through a heavy mxe induced psychosis but if you have any more questions dont hesitate to ask me by pm.

Theres different techniques for each weld position. Im excellent at flat welding but cant weld horizontal, vertical, or overhead worth shit.

What positions will you be using? All or just one or two?

Just remember its all about having the correct angle, speed, and technique.

If your doing verticals pm me an i can explain about the stringer or weave technique a little bit.
Some welders use both. Others prefer just one.

But if your doing it often for long periods id even consider buying a proper respirator if they wont supply one.

Seriously you dont want health complications down the road. You want to be able to spend the money your earning

Im sure youll work with lots of older people that never wore a respirator, but theyre really not bad to wear and will block out almost all ( if not all) the bad shit in the smoke

Im only 23 and my lungs are fucked from the disgusting shit ive breathed in (torch fumes, molten steel fumes, ive burnt nickle dust with a torch in a nickle smelter)

I worked with guys who were wreckless and didnt understand how bad it was, and i was a young apprentice who didnt know any better.

Granted, a lot of that shit is horrible, but i assure you stick welding can be just as bad. I just finished my last term of ironworking trade school and there is  lot of nasty shit in weld smoke.

But angle, speed, rod size, temperature all play a big role in a proper weld.

Im sure youll get better and better. For me it wasnt a huge deal as there is lots of other non welding components to my job. So i didnt need it, it was just recommended.

Jesus i wrote a book

If your working outside and only doing it in intervals during your day and not eight or ten hours straight, you may not need a respirator but its still recommended.

Watch YouTube videos

Welding tips and tricks is a great guy to watch.

The best way is practice lots of it. Hopefully you aren't welding critical

Get an auto darken helm and keep your out of the cloud . Grind off paint or rust. What kind of rod are you using?

Yeah and get a cap with. Brim. If you are doing lots of overhead then spend the extra money and get a titanium Miller . Thing is tits and respirator fits underneath .

Practice man.. Belly up close to an old timer at your shop and pick his brain..

Yeah sure YouTube is good and all but nothing beats an old guy yelling at you and making you feel like shit when you don't listen

Thanks guys. Appreciate all the help.

I will look into that respirator.

We dont do a lot of welding, just small parts. Like 5% of my day was watching them weld today. I  tried and didnt get it.

I guess its just one of those practice things. I will have to learn about all the angles, temps, rods, etc too.

Lots to learn. Im psyched to get hands-on job experience with no schooling before it.

Don't burn yourself.
Wear a wide-brimmed had.
Carry a small squirt bottle filled with water.

If its a critical weld, you may not want to be putting water on it.(if thats what above poster was even talking about oerhaps the water was for another reason) Depends on what kind of weld procedure they call for though

If you are welding overhead or find your getting burned get long sleeve welding leathers to protect your body. Though not always necessary.

If not necessary and you dont find yourself getting burned,  a long sleeved shirt is still a good idea. If you are welding enough with exposed skin it can "sun" burn you.

Water is to cool down spark-made hotspots and small fires if welding is around weeds, brush or other flammable stuff.

When I sweat pipes, I carry a spray bottle for the same reason. I'd hate to burn down a construction site just because of one accidental hotspot.

Respirator and proper eye protection is important,
a steady hand helps.
I'm not much of a welder but I've used a cutting torch you years.
It's fun cutting steel, except for the occasionally getting burned by sparks thing.
Just don't flinch at the sparks and they don't burn you as bad.:smirk:

Small circular motions, puddle and push..

someone mentioned auto dimming visor, those are nice. I worked with an old timer that has welded all his life..I remember one morning him saying..everything I work with is cold and heavy.  After that i decided it wasnt for me.

Stick welding is a drag motion.  How else is the slag gonna protect the weld .

Get proper training and certification. You avoid silly questions like this, you know what your doing and you'll be able to negotiate a better pay rate.

On a serious note, protect your eyes, ears, lungs and back.

Get an auto darkening visor.

I know how to weld but it's just easier if I post this.

Stick welding sucks.

Stick has its pros and cons, all welding processes do, however stick cant be beat in simplicity, versatility and penetration. The downside is its loud, messy, spatter and that's not mentioning flipping the selector to AC.
