Growing mushrooms in space

There is a school project where students made an automatic microlaboratory and they send it to space in december.
Im not sure what they are expecting to happen. The astronauts are going to report for students once in a week about how their project is going.
Why they do that? Are they trying what happens when you grow mushrooms in 0 gravity? What can be the goal here?

Picture of the lab.
Big jar is growing chamber, top of that is watering system. On the left there is a camera and on the bottom right is computer guided valve.

Well it might shed some light on tropic responses like gravotropisim which orients the caps right before the mushroom begins to sporulate. The absence of gravity at that stage would undoubtedly cause some kind of an effect. Might be helpful in controlling sporeload in heavy producers such as oysters, or perhaps increasing it in ones where spores are desired like ganodermas.

my hypothesis is that they will discover basidium to be a superior form of propulsion as the mushrooms rocket around in zero gs

in space you will easily get to see/measure the effect of the swapping of responabiliy between stimuli at relevant points in the life cycle
very interesting experiment

The first laboratory the students made was done poorly because the mushrooms dried up. Then they made another about 2 months ago but the SpaceX rocket blew up and there went the laboratory too. Im glad they got another chance. Good guy Nasa =)
The shrooms that they grow is Polyporus brumalis.

The mini lab has been launched to space 6.12. Atlas V-Cygnus rocket is heading to ISS and the experiment can begin.
