pasteurization of substrates/casing
    #22047254 - 08/05/15 12:43 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

As I have been preparing my substrate and casing lately, I have noticed that there is temperature fluctuations as well as different temperature zones throughout the jars being pasteur.

I'm assuming the best place to take the reading is in the very middle of the jar. But, even though the core might have the correct temp, the bottom is always hotter than the rest. This leads me to my question: do you take your reading from the center of the jar, or would it be better to take the reading from the bottom of the jar?

Also, any info on poo pasteurization appreciated.

Take your temp from the center of the jar. I follow Frank's guides for pasteurization

You take your temps from the center of the jar\bag. From what I have gathered, while the areas surrounding the center will exceed the temperatures you are going for and the good bacteria in that area will be killed, enough of the good bacteria are left in the center where you are measuring temp for them to spread to the rest of the material quickly after you are done pasteurizing and the materials have cooled.

exactly what I was looking for, someone who understands my line of thinking.

also, I didn't use all the casing I prepared, have you been able to successfully patch using day or 2 day old prepared casing material?  im using jiffy mix if that makes a difference?

cool, since this is my first tub, I am over worrying about contams, trying to be careful.  expecially since I have almost a 3 inch sub without the casing.

I cant wait for my next tub of Boner Clones  :excited:

3 inches is a little shallow TBH. Most people do 4-6". You may end up having to mist/fan it. Should still produce just fine though.

I should be able to tell when I will need to mist or fan.  what signs do you notice when needing to mist or fan tubs.

I think it's a good idea to pasteurize at temperatures on the lower end of the pasteurization range (140 - 160) but for a longer time.

I shoot for 150 and never pasteurize for less than 2 hours.

I disagree.  I do lots of 3"-3.5" subs and they are just as set and forget. 4" is pretty standard but more than that is total overkill. 6" is going to put your sub at risk of being anaerobic.

3" sub. Not fanned. Not misted. Hell it wasnt even cased. 331 dry grams first flush.

90 is what I've always done. Any more can kill off some beneficial bacteria.
