Sources for rye berries
    #22046340 - 08/05/15 09:24 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Anybody have a good, fairly inexpensive, online source for rye berries that they've used to purchase rye in bulk? The 2 health food stores in the town where I live have stopped stocking rye berries

yea, u can find cheap anything online in bulk.  the problem is shipping usually.  u'll pay more for freight than for the product itself.
i think some companies have drop points they deliver to anyway, and so there is no charge, but I'm not familiar with them.  u just order, and go to drop point to pick up.

go visit a local farmer around you and ask what they use for feed and where they get it.  thats ur best bet, and u can keep ur money local, and make a new friend, and get some straw and poo while ur there.  thats what i ended up doing.

people use tractor supply co. too i think.  i have none around me, but the prices people talk about on the boards seem really cheap.

Try a local feed/farming store like Farm and Fleet, Tractor Supply co, ect... Some Walmarts and grocery stores carry it, but you will pay a premium due to the small quantity per package.
If you sign up for Amazon Prime's free trial you can have as much as you want shipped for free to your door in three days at a very competitive price. Also many of the vendors here stock Rye Berries and are good people. Only if you are growing edibles though.

or switch to oats and save money:cookiemonster:

Honeyville has good shipping on all of their grains. $5 on anything. They are more expensive than getting it locally though.

Those farm & fleet oats are so cheap damn.

A lot of people (including me) are using oats because they are in every farm store, they are super cheap and they work just as well.

TSC, Farm and Fleet, Big R all have whole feed oats for less than $15 for 50lbs.

Yeah, $70 for 40 lbs of rye isn't a good deal. I didn't bother looking at the oats or any other grains.

Yep. Even Amazon is less than half that price and will ship it two day air if you play your cards right.

Where is the rye on Amazon coming from?

http://www.amazon.com/Rye-Berries-25-Lb-Bag/dp/B000RHVIQG

There are a few sources, "Angelina's Gourmet" is this one.

OP should just find a feed/farm supply store.
If they don't normally carry it, many will let you pick up items in store that they stock online.

If money is a huge concern though he should just use oats. Dead simple to prep, very clean, and dirt cheap.

It's actually 50 pounds for $60 but yeah, still kind of expensive.

Amazon lists an $18 shipping charge on that link.

Either way you are going to spend more money if you are buying them online.

I'll probably switch to oats once my rye runs out. I didn't realize how cheap it was in comparison until now.

What's wrong with the old classic WBS?

For me it was a lot more dirty/ messy and tedious to prepare and work with. The grains are small and hard to strain or dry without making a mess and it's not as consistent as other things.

I decided to try rye and it has been so much easier and convenient to use for spawn.

I'd use bird seed again though if I had to.

I've done rye, WBS, corn, milo, millet (never oats) and they're all basically exactly the same IMO. Corn doesn't hold as much water, but that's it.

So I've skimmed thru...
Whole oats!!!!!!

Quicker prep time, not as easy to over hydrate and fuck up.
Also way cheaper, and commonly available dam near everywhere.

I get it at $15 for 50lbs

Oats are also less mess than WBS which used to get all over my kitchen.  I've never used rye but I quite like oats.
