Alternatives if you dont have access to pressure cooker?
    #2204566 - 12/27/03 09:13 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Need to sterlize some jars and what not, but do not have access to pressure cooker.. is there another route around this, or could it be a problem?

What kind of jars? Grain or brown rice flower?

If BRF, you can steam them for an hour in a big pot with an inch of water in the bottom and a towel to keep the jars from making contact with the hot bottom of the pot.

If you're doing grain, there is a technique called fractional sterilization that may work for you, but most of the time it results in a miserable failure. You may want to give it a try anyway, but I'd strongly suggest you get a pressure cooker if you're working with grain.

Anyway, here's the FAQ on fractional sterilization:

Good luck.

Without a PC you can steam standard PF jars (Brown Rice Flour & Vermiculite), or hominy and vermiculite, or you can do fractional sterilization of some other grain.

in additiona to the fractional steriization also steam the jars of grain, it will increase the chance of success, a pasta pot with a basket is pretty effective.

My brother's uncle in law has a pc , but he has always figured that since a microwave works on the principle of exicited water molecules that a person should be to get that to work . I know that he would sure try to use a microwave for about 5 minutes on a jar of quart size , then about 15 mins later do it again . And it might not even take that long to kill most things , but he does not know if this is the case . He told me that he wished that someone had done studies on the effects on bulk substrate . He told me that he uses it on mycelium syringes and it sure kills everything that he has come up against.
