"According to a study conducted in late April by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates can't read.

The current literacy rate isn't any better than it was 10 years ago. According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (completed most recently in 2003, and before that, in 1992), 14 percent of adult Americans demonstrated a "below basic" literacy level in 2003, and 29 percent exhibited a "basic" reading level."

Also,

"Adults Age 20 and Older 2. More than two-thirds (68.8 percent) of adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than one-third (35.7 percent) of adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 (6.3 percent) have extreme obesity."

So everyone in American is dumb and overweight..

The first bit is very sad and I have personal feelings about it from seeing so many people who lack basic reading comprehension or writing skills. I forget the article, but a professor at a university stated that many colleges are now having to offer writing and reading comprehension courses to first year college students just to get them to the level that they need to be to complete university level work.

I believe there are several factors to play in this but one of the biggest ones may be "social passing" (I don't remember the exact term, forgive me.). It's the practice of passing children to the next grade, even if they aren't ready, so they do not feel ostracized by their peers. It does a severe disservice to the child's education and sets them up for a life time of issues in the future. Furthermore, as more Americans are forced to work longer hours on dual incomes with fewer households containing multiple generations; many kids aren't receiving the kind of after school reinforcement necessary for them to reach their full potential. Couple this with schools slashing budgets and it's a recipe for educational disaster. "Teaching for the test" doesn't encourage learning, but rote memorization and the desire to shoehorn every individual into the same learning style is nothing more than the remnants of our once school-to-factory educational system.

Another interesting observation, this time with regard to the obesity epidemic, is that American children actually participate in as much physical activity as the rest of the developed world and in some cases, MORE. Despite this, most of the food in our diets is appalling. The amount of sugar found in things marketed as healthy or for kids may be the not-so-hidden trigger behind the spike in ADD diagnoses that, unfortunately, is causing many young boys to be placed on medications when really, removing the obscene amounts of sugar from their diets would be more beneficial. (Side note: I'm not saying young girls are not prescribed medications as well but, from my reading, it appears young boys face the brunt of this.)

These really are sad situations indeed.

Anyone catch that key&Peele where they made fun of the NFL draft? They were drafting and trading the best teachers in the country based on their stats(test scores)

Bought a vaporizer for when I get real desperate because I at least wanted something healthier because I knew I'd slip, but I'm trying to use it as little as possible because I don't want to smoke anything. Haven't had one since early Sunday and have only been hitting the vape maybe like twice a day if the cravings get real bad. Was up to two packs a day so this is the best effort I've made so far.

You know something. I only started being around vapes when I came to Florida. And then I stopped smoking through the patch so there was no point for me to use it. I wonder what it's like though. I've had people offer for me to try it but I'll start doing that shit again and I can't afford it. LOL

You're better off with nothing. I can see why people rave about them, even while using it my sense of smell is starting to come back and I'm already noticing a difference in my breathing already 4 days later, and they taste better, but it seems to me like vapes can be even easier to get hooked to than cigs because they even feel cleaner but it's almost definitely better to smoke nothing than something.

You did good by just quitting all together and not going back, hopefully in another week or two I'll be at a point where I don't have to rely on the vape to get me passed bad cravings and be able to quit all together. Good on you man for actually going through with it, it's hard as shit to give it up, and you're better off not looking back haha.
