encrypting your whole drive with truecrypt is easy. they have a wizard guide specifically for doing it
its unecessary for me, i prefer just keeping a small 10gig folder that everything i want encrypted is in. but its easy to do. just takes awhile. and you get prompted for a password shortly after the BIOS
and it didnt effect performance at all for me. might on a gaming computer, but on a laptop with a linux distro, there is no change in performace

It can be done. You'll need to install it before you install linux though. I used to have a second hand apple that had the hard drive encrypted. You entered a password before the OS booted up. It would take for ever to unencrypt everything before the OS even booted up though. I don't remember the software, so you'll have to search the web. It was redundant IMO though.

nope. not with truecrypt at least. its a simple process, and you dont lose data unless something goes catastrophically wrong

It's easy to do a full disk encryption on linux, a lot of distributions offer you the option to do it from the beginning.
There's a kernel module & File system container called LUKS & LVM. I can't remember the specifics off of the top of my head, but it wasn't particularly difficult to set up.

Update: this fixed itself on its own somehow. I hadn't restarted the computer in quite a while, and when I did a little bit earlier, Windows now appears as an option in the Ubuntu boot menu. I'm getting used to using Ubuntu full time though.
