hibernating or restarting it doesnt really, but leaving it off lets the boards cool down and contract. over time it may damage the hotter boards like GPUs and certain chipsets. some people say its a myth and cant happen, but physics would tell me otherwise
even if it didnt, my PC would still be on all night anyways

Anyone have recommendations for a Firefox plugin that will get embedded Youtube videos here to work? I've tried a couple different ones and no dice. Also I can no longer drag tabs (e.g. to the bookmarks toolbar to make bookmarks) but initially this was working fine. Weird.

Yeah I figured it out, never mind. Couldn't find Flash when searching from the add-ons page, just random third-party shit, so I was thinking there was no official plugin. Once I did download the official plugin I ran into this error where it said the thing I just downloaded wasn't in my 'sources', but it was just a matter of checking off some boxes in 'Ubuntu Software Center'.

Mechanical hard drives have a hard time when you spin them up frequently, especially if it's really cold (<10C) due to condensation and wear on the bearings, but in practice, this isn't really an issue within the normal economic lifespan of a drive (3~4 years). The same is true for the problem with shrinkage and expansion of semiconductors that was mentioned, although some high end, high powered graphics cards have been known to have issues in this respect. But the only thing that helps with that is a draconian cooling regime; leaving the machine on doesn't do much except raise your energy bill.

you want to encrypt an entire hard drive??
from what i know about GPG (pgp), you can encrypt a file if you have the software installed then it's in the drop down menu from a right click.
to do multiple i imagine you can zip everything into a single file and encrypt it. but i mean this would be more for transfer data. if you want to keep your computer encrypted and usable i'm not sure how (or why) you'd do that

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to. I've done full drive encryption with truecrypt on windows for the past 5+ years. You have to enter a preboot password. For some reason you can't do this with truecrypt when running ubuntu.

idk i opted out of even using the regular passworded account when i reformatted my windows recently. besides the point being i don't really desire that level of security for the info on my personal computer, i am not really familiar with the software. but i would imagine there is an alternative designed for linux if you can't use wine for the program you like, there is a lot of high level security uses for linux.

Surely it can be done, but why? I'd say the option that is offered during setup to encrypt your home folder should suffice for just about anything I can think of. You'll also not have to suffer the penalty of your machine having to decrypt everything it reads from the hard drive, including executables and OS parts.

Because I want the whole drive encrypted and a second password. It's easier. No need to remember passwords for individual folders/files I want to encrypt, I just need the one for the drive and my windows password. I just enter a password before windows boots, then my windows password and that's all I ever have to do. Boot and navigation is just as fast as it is without encryption, there is no wait to decrypt anything.

that's different than actual encryption i'm pretty sure. encryption isn't just password protection it actually codes everything with a key that you need to decode it...
i'm not sure why you need 2 passwords, it seems like just an illusion of high security than any kind of actually security.

I like it because you need to enter a password, that is damned hard to crack, before windows even starts to boot, in order to access any of the information on the drive. I seriously doubt the windows password is hard to get past too. I keep the windows password around for when I just want to lock my computer without shutting it down to keep snoopers off.
I'm far from an expert on encryption but it truecrypt took a good 20 hours to encrypt the entire drive. IIRC it takes teh same time to permanently decrypt it.

So with home folder encryption on Linux you have one password for your user account and your encrypted home folder. Even less to remember. Maybe I'm missing your point, but how does that not meet your requirements? Btw very confusing that you ask a question about ubuntu and then go on about windows; the option I'm telling you about isn't there in Windows (unless you use third party software).

I prefer whole drive encryption with preboot password to an encrypted home folder.

Ok, I'm sure it can be done. But I wouldn't recommend it due to the performance penalty and the difficulties in recovering your os and programs if something goes wrong.
