Yeah I was always told if you're gonna partition to 2 OS's then try and use a Linux system as a base because of how their file systems work. (Or at least that was the shpeil I was given.)

Sincerely good luck though man I hope it works out.  Oh and if you find a way to run Netflix via Ubuntu :pm: me!

I normally run gentoo or arch, but at the moment I'm using some really old hardware and need general functionality and usability over, tweaked out, geeky OS's... So I'm using xubuntu.. I gotta admit I'm pretty impressed.

The only reason I've never really dug the easy-to-use distro's is because of the horrific desktop environments that come bundled... but I use xfce as standard these days :yesnod:.

Yeah I really don't want to have to reinstall Windows, maybe a solution is to make up a USB stick with a Windows installer and do a "repair." Found a couple pages on people having similar problems but I haven't got to trying the proposed solutions yet.

The page I was looking at claimed that Netflix should work in Chrome under Ubuntu, will give it a shot and post results here. With current versions of Firefox it's apparently impossible.

There's a couple of tutorials on the Web that can help you to reconfigure grub to include your existing windows install. Just Google a bit; generally it can be done without reinstalling windows.

There was a functioning boot menu in place already on the computer before this (had previously installed Ubuntu via Wubi, which is an installer program that runs from Windows, but every time I tried the installation, the username and password I had selected wouldn't work.) The original boot menu is now gone and the only options in the new one are related to the new Ubuntu installation. I'm thinking there must be some fairly simple fix without reinstalling either OS but I haven't investigated too much yet.

You might run repair windows to get the windows boot manager back and then add ubuntu to the windows boot manager.

Yeah that seems like it may be the most straightforward option for me.

Anybody use sun microsystems? I use a a sun blade for work and it has a funky keyboard. I'm always hitting the wrong buttons because I'm used to standard keyboards.

The only thing that is stopping me from using Linux is that apparently Adobe products are not compatible with it, and I have a cloud subscription and use it pretty extensively.
Kind of a bummer, but I've heard that there is a way to run it with ubuntu, I'm not clear on that though.

Anyone have any input in that arena?

Right now I'm kind of caught between upgrading to windows 10 and just running Linux. I have two macbooks(circa 2009 and 2011) that work okay, but need their topcases replaced, so I might just spend the money to refurb one of those so I have access to the adobe products I need regardless of what OS I'm running on this machine.

as mentioned earlier wine works to fun windows on linux, i think there is an issue if it has a lot of graphics making it useless for games.

i only would want it for poker which is pretty basic software but i haven't actually tried it out yet. but just install wine and see if it will run adobe.

That was the app I heard about, I couldn't think of the name - thanks!

If I heard right wine will make it possible to run it on ubuntu, but linux is another story - - I use photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, etc etc etc, so we'll see how it goes.

ubuntu is linux. the different distro's are the same OS with just different programs on the image, from what i understand.

like i also use linux kali but only because it has a bunch of nifty programs in the OS so i don't have to download anything for it if i am doing something that i would use kali for.

but if i wanted to i could put everything i like on ubuntu that i use on kali.

i would use linux most of the time if i want so lazy.

maybe 10-20% of the time i'm using a computer im booted up on linux

for virtually everything except playing video games, ubuntu is great. i can watch movies in 1080p, browse the internet, even play SNES/PSX/PS2 emulators

but moderns games wont run on linux. wine, or virtual boxes simply arent good enough

that said, if i wasnt lazy and actually rebooted my pc every day, i'd probably end up using ubuntu more than 50% of the time. i just leave my pc on all the time. they say its better for you to keep the hardware running 24/7 anyways
