I use Ubuntu. I haven't really had any problems with getting programs. Once in a while I run into something, but there is almost always a pretty easy fix

I've been using Linux for years. My only gripe is that gimp is a poor substitute for photoshop, no matter what the tux fan boys may say. So I still use windows for photo editing. Otherwise, Linux works fairly well although it has its little glitches. It can be finicky sometimes. But overall, it works alright.

You can try wine. I know nothing about online poker though.
But if windows has been working well for you, there's really no need to switch over. I've been using windows and Linux side by side for years and one isn't really better than the other. Just flawed in different ways.

I really should learn my way around linux a lot better, my lack of familiarity with it holds me back in school.

well i kind of like it because its so small, only a gig for ubuntu. i have a pentium processor and i feel like all the unnecessarily shit that comes with windows and my computer slows it down when i get to multitasking a lot.
basically i want to create an image of ubuntu with all the programs i want because i recently had to reformat my computer due to a virus and it sucked.

I like Ubuntu and Red Hat. I hate microsoft. Linux works for everything that I want to do. If your a gamer though, then you should probably stick with Windows or get a Xbox, Playstation, etc.

Maybe its gotten better, but I wanted to get skyrim for linux and it was only available for windows at the time. I think that a lot of games are incompatible with linux.

Yeah, same developers focusing their efforts on the operating systems that the vast majority of gamers are using, ie windows. Also the spotty and sometimes outright crappy video driver support from gfx card manufacturers plays a role; it boils down that across a large user base, Linux is too much of a risk in terms of getting good graphics support and performance.

I love linux. It takes power-user to a new level... that being said, it has shit media editing software and no games. Every time I duel boot linux, I find that it collects dust because the things I use a comp for can just be done in windows.
I do have a USB boot of a Linux distribution that I carry around for less than ethical means though

I've been using Ubuntu for 3 years now and never looked back to Windows. I've NEVER had a crash and it does everything I've ever needed to do more efficiently.
Windows blows IMHO...

This thread inspired me to repartition my SSD and install Ubuntu... and now for some reason Windows 7 doesn't appear in the boot menu, so I have to figure out some way to fix that. Also I was reading that Netflix will only run if I install Chrome. The upside is that I can practice the material from the Unix systems programming course I bombed in the winter.

I have had problems with netflix running on Ubuntu. If I were you I'd try and wipe the harddrive Intall ubuntu and the wizard will prompt if you want to partition the harddrive. Then install windows and BOOM you've got both OS's right there.
For whatever reason Windows doesn't like to share computers if it's the main OS IMHE.

There was a functioning boot menu in place already on the computer before this (had previously installed Ubuntu via Wubi, which is an installer program that runs from Windows, but every time I tried the installation, the username and password I had selected wouldn't work.) The original boot menu is now gone and the only options in the new one are related to the new Ubuntu installation. I'm thinking there must be some fairly simple fix without reinstalling either OS but I haven't investigated too much yet.
