I've been waiting 3 weeks for a background check.... 1

So I got hired at a new job, pending the background check. It's been three weeks though and they still haven't got it in. I have been calling every 5 days or so and the last time I talked to them they said that the company they hired for the background check is doing "further investigating" whatever that means. Is that bad? I have a couple of drug charges in another state that I am pretty sure will come up. Is that what is taking so long? Will a couple misdemeanor charges be enough for them to not hire me? I really want this job and it would be a shame that a couple of stupid mistakes in my past will cost me my future. This waiting game SUCKKSSSS

Did they require you at any point to disclose your criminal background, i.e. on an application?
If they did, and you were not 100% honest, and it shows up on your background check, then unfortunately that is grounds for them to not hire you.

I would think it depends on the nature of the work you'd be doing. It does suck though that mistakes from the party can haunt you like that.
If you don't mind me asking what type of work is it?

I thought it was just for felony charges. I live in california if that makes a difference. The thing is, I have worked in other places since the charges where they do background checks and never had a problem with it before. Maybe they just do more thorough checks at the job I am at now.

at least they're only misdemeanors, though.
if it makes you feel any better, i still have felony charges on my record, and many places have still hired me because i was honest about them. it depends on how liberal the place of employment is, though. usually they are just looking for violent crimes/theft, but if you were supposed to disclose and didn't, that doesn't look to great....

Well since I had held other jobs since and it was in another state I was hoping it wouldn't have come up again. I just wish it didn't take so damn long but the time frame is making me believe that they found my charges in oregon.... perhaps the other jobs only checked california in which is why I was hired with no problems.

Someone do a background check on me and tell me what comes up I would do one myself but I don't have any money, hence why I am getting a job.

Could just be a preliminary check pulled a flag and they have a backlog and haven't gotten to further reviewing your case yet. My last background check took forever because there was a problem with their system and then they had a huge backlog to clear which made it take weeks for everyone.

I can only hope that's the case...I am trying to be very positive about it. The people that interviewed me really want me there as well. I kicked ass on my interview and they called me back as soon as I left the building to offer me a job. They have been really nice so I hope that works out in my favor.

background checks take forever; give it time. it's not like person checking into you is ONLY checking into you. they probably have AT LEAST 10 on theri desk at any given point in time. they'll make calls for all of 'em one day, drive around the next, do paperwork on day 3, etc.
not a quick process, i'm sure.

This means you'd probably be working around some controlled substances, right? Probably wouldn't be too surprising if they were pretty strict on this kind of thing. Good luck though.

I got a job at a pharmacy with a misdemeanor drug charge. Kinda depends on how long ago it was. If it was pretty recent yeah it might cause a problem. If it was many years ago, it might not really matter.

Yeah it's just frustrating when the veterinary office told me that it only takes a week, so it makes me question that mine is a special case and had a bunch of red flags come up. I know there's nothing I can do but it's been quite the stomach churning time period for me. I really want this job since I am going to school to become a vet tech and this would be a great opportunity for me to gain experience in my field. I wouldn't care so much if it was just another job to me.

The thing that really worries me, that might make matters worse, was that I didn't pay those charges either. I was basically swept up from my family to move back to california shortly after. Could there be a warrant because of this? I have been pulled over before recently and nothing came back when they ran my license though and like I said, I have held other jobs and nothing came up. I know it was stupid but I had no choice in my leaving. I was in a bad place.

If you end up missing out on the job because of this, i'd definitely re-contact the vet place in a formal letter explaining (concisely) the circumstances and reiterating how you're an exceptional human and genuinely motivated both in terms of general work ethic and also specifically within this field. I'd offer (in that letter) to work for free for as often as you're free [as you'll have to get another job to pay your bills] for the time being, until you can prove to them that you're worthy of jumping into the next spot that comes open there~

I'd even draft it in advance, so that when [if] they contact you with [potential] bad news, you have it there ready to hand over/click send.
edit: and, again, the reasoning behind the quasi-begging and free labor is because this is relevant for your field, and relevant work experience is unsubstitutable in terms of increasing your chances of getting the ideal job you want in the future, post-education

On a positive note when you fail it you'll know right away. IME taking longer than usual is better than a next day "hell no we're not hiring you". Chances are they saw those drug charges and decided to do a little more digging. And as long as they dont find anything else, my bet is your good. But I'll throw some good vibes your way just in case. Heres hoping your shit got lost in the bureaucratic nightmare cloud.
