Technology just saved my grandfathers life 5

This morning was fucking scary and im still recovering from it. So I got home from going to the methadone clini to get my morning dose and my grandfather as sitting on the couch looking very tired. He immediately told me that he thought he got struck by lightning an hour ago as he was taking the cat out outside. He got zapped and saw a light coming from his heart and fell to the ground. Hes 85. Luckily my cousin was home and helped him up and sat him on the couch. We didn't know what happened...then we got a call from a nurse saying that his heart monitor went off and that his pacemakers built-in defibrillator had went off because his heart stopped. So the pacemaker literally saved his life.
Now mind you this man is the reason I have clothes on my back and is basically my dad. The day he dies will be the worst day of my life.
I just want this thread to be a reminder to everyone how much we truly need technology and how thankful I am for it. If it wasn't for technology, he would be dead.

No at first he thought he got struck because it had just stopped lightning outside like an hour before it happened. But we later found out that he had spent too much time in his garden pulling weeds and stuff and his heart stopped and the pacemaker sent the shock to revive his heart. The shock made him think it was a strike but it was the pacemaker doing its job.
i don't know what im going to do without him financially and emotionally when hes gone...hes done everything for me and my family. Hes legit a greek immigrant off the boat that worked his whole life nonstop...legit workaholic until he eventually owned like 12 houses and became a millionaire.
but hes one of those rich people that saves money every way he can. He drives a beatdown SUV and stuff just to save money even though he could easily afford the best things in life. Hes just the perfect example. I would be perfect if i were half the man he is.

I worked with a guy who had one of those (approx 40 years old) and one morning he came in and said he was getting a shower and his went off and he "came to" in the tub with his dog freaking out about all the commotion. Apparently they knock the shit out of you when they fire. It might be time to let gramps kick his feet up and enjoy being catered to from here on out..

Man he deserves the best. I tell him all the time that ill do anything he asks. my wife cooks for him all the time and 75% of the time he refuses it. Just now he started to walk with a cane because he didn't want to come off as old. Hes just stubborn and has a lot of pride. He just said this morning "when I cant work I mind as well be dead". Hes a true workaholic. Never touched a drug in his life but used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day up until he was around 40...my grandmother bitched at him nonstop to quit and one day he legit just threw his pack of smokes out the window and never touched them again. Hes a fucking beast. He speaks broken English and came to this country with like 7 cents and somehow ended up owning around 10-12 houses all with the mortgages paid off.
Hes just an awesome person man and when he goes im going to be lost. I just cant handle another death anytime soon...my brother died in 2007, then a year later my grandmother died(who was basically my mom and supported me along with my grandfather)
but yeah, I do as much as I possibly can for him. I drive him wherever he needs to go...I do any lifting he needs..i go the store for him...and im just basically on call for him whenever he needs something...but for the most part he still takes pride in doing mostly everything himself. This I believe will be the death of him....jesus it almost killed him this morning. if he wasn't in the garden for so long and taking out the trash and just cleaning up the house then he wouldn't have had that heart-attack(or whatever it was)

My grandpa was the same way. He had to go to the hospital because working in his tomato garden just about blew his heart out. Fell a few times because he refused to let people go get the mail for him. Trying to snow plow the slanted driveway etc. Stuff like that. That generation has the pride gene firmly established in them. It's a fine line between not "babying" them but always being on guard to catch them if they start to weeble wobble..
Getting old is a bitch man. I'm sure I'll be just as stubborn when it's my time, if I make it that long..

Yup...his garden is a tomato garden as well
you basically explained him perfectly. Man..being 85 must be crazy...knowing you could die at any moment...always feeling like shit..etc..my god
man today really got me thinking about death and just how much I am afraid to die and how trippy it is that when you die you are gone forever. Life is truly a fucking bitch...it gives us family to love and grow so attached to..then boom..life takes them away and leaves you to deal with it. I don't want to get old and I don't want to die...I seriously wish I was never born to begin with
people love to act macho and say they arnt afraid of dying...but man when it comes knocking on your door it WILL shake you...and hopefully not break you..
